Looks like the FAA in the US are going to allow electronic devices like Smartphones, tablets, eBooks, etc. to be used during take off and landing:

I assume the EU authorities will follow quickly. Hard to argue that devices have to be turned off on safety grounds when it is left in the US. It is going to end up with all sorts of arguments between passengers and flight attendants.

Probably best if the EU relaxes their rules at the same time as the US.

Practically speaking, on the flights I've been on here in Europe recently, the flight attendants are ignoring it anyway, making little effort to force people to actually turn off their devices, with many continue to be used during landing.
