Recover Files & Data from a Failing Hard Drive OS X

    This article arrived from osXdaily yesterday. I thought I'd share it here as a reference for the basics in a drive failure situation.

    They mention a couple of disk tools in the article (I have DiskWarrior installed) but they don't mention either TechTool Pro (which I also use) or Disk Utility (which should be every-one's starting point IMHO)

    TechTool Pro is very useful in that it has a facility to create a bootable emergency / maintenance drive containing all the appropriate recovery tools from your boot drive. The emergency drive can be a partition on your boot drive or on an external.

    A proper backup strategy is the best defence. However, if stupidity rules, I've used Prosoft's Data Rescue software to rescue files for friends (who should know better).
