4WD, AWD, efficiency when run in 2WD mode ?

Just doing a bit of window shopping, Qashqai, Mazda CX-5 etc but my question applies to any make/model.
I see the vehicles I am looking at are offered in 2WD and more expensive 4WD flavours. I realise that 4WD/AWD modes are less fuel efficient than 2WD, but what about when you disengage 4WD? Does the fuel efficiency improve ? Will it be as good as a native 2WD model?

A lot of them are 4wd on demand so they vary the power going to the rear axle.
You generally can't turn it on and off.

You'd have to ask yourself what people pay the premium for 4WD, they can often lead hard enough lives.

You've lost me there with the last sentence, are you saying avoid 4wd?

Unless you need 4wd or are gonna drive hard then yes.

I think Nissan fitted a lot of the 2013 Qashqai's with 4wd at no extra cost or very little extra in money over the 2wd versions.

No because the extra weight of components that drive the 3rd/4th wheel still has to be pulled around regardless.
