Thinking of buying vw passat 06 but see a lot of bad reports about the electronic handbrake. Have you had any dealings with them.

Dad has an 07, handbrake switch has gone once in him and was a cheap fix , saying that the hand break wouldn't set when the switch went :/

looking at other threads think the switch is the cheapest fix. Callipers or motors which seem to be a common fault seem to be hundreds to fix.Alot of bad reports about this problem

I have an 05 and have had problems with this. The Calliper motor went. Then a computer module went. Both replaced in region of 150 - 200 but I bought them second hand on ebay.
The callipers are really expensive if they go (fingers crossed)
What happens is the handbrake gets 'stuck' and eventually you might moving after a panic of sequence of on/off / key out / key in - Thats Ok until your stopped in rush hour traffic. I have on occasion had to disconnect the battery in order to reset the ecu.

Recently I have an 'Intermittent' issue.

All I can say if I will never buy a passat again - I will recommend buying a Golf with same engine but without this electronic hanbrake (or the electronic key - Thats another problem).

Had a 06 2.0 TDI Passat with DSG for 5 years and racked up 243,000 km on it without any major issues

Yes the caliper on the back right wheel started acting up and the fuel pump failed one morning but with that sort of mileage you can't really complain. No issues with the injectors (though they were replaced under the recall anyway), and no other issues really beyond normal wear and tear.

She was serviced roughly every 3-4 months though at a dealer and never ran on cheap/dodgy fuel etc. Full tank would last me about 1000-1100km of mostly motorway driving, very comfortable, huge boot and well-wearing interior.

Don't mind the horror stories. Just check out the car and the history extensively and if buying through a dealer get a decent warranty from them.

Switch is the cheapest fix alright. My Caliper Motor went as well.. Its the one regret I have with the Car.. Superb to drive but I find the button handbrake given the problems i have had a real annoyance

Other things to look out for is the Flywheel.. I think these passat has a dual mass flywheel that is notorious for going around 100,000 to 150,000km.

Thanks for all your inputs. Went against going for the passat and bought a Volvo S40 1.6 diesel. She is 06 and has all service history with her. Fingers crossed now i guess. Thanks again.
