I fancy a short getaway to break up a quiet period and to relax after handing up a chunk of thesis work - maybe 4/5 days sometime in October, I was thinking of Stockholm. Flights ex Dublin on Aer Lingus are reasonable, so I'm thinking what the heck?

Has anyone been, if so are there any good friendly hostels to stay in - I will more than likely be going solo (female) and I'd like someplace where there's a good mix of ages (i.e. not a party hostel/ retirement home!!)

    Cheers! :D

Did Stockholm November last year. Weather was terrible but otherwise a lovely break. Check SAS airlines too. They did fly direct from Dublin. Very easy to walk around the city. I found it slightly more expensive than Ireland. Maybe an extra 20%. Stayed in a hotel not a hostel. Real youth culture in the city. Great nightclubs, coffee shops etc. Enjoy the break!

I stayed in the City Backpackers hostel a couple of years ago, top notch hostel and pretty central too. I was travelling solo and found it friendly, the staff seemed to care that everyone has a good stay.

As said above Stockholm is a great walkable city so if the weather is good i highly recommend the free walking tour, google it you wont regret it!

One thing I didnt like about Stockholm was how expensive it is, but as long as you are prepared for that then you will be fine. Also that Airport ryanair fly in/out of is stupidly far outside the city, def go with AI or SAS, it'll be worth the little extra.

    Enjoy

Stockholm is one of my favourite cities, and I'm very widely travelled. And 4 or 5 days is about right and gives you time to get outside of the actual city centre. There are some great bars and cafes in the suburbs

I don't know if you're a runner at all....but if you are, take your runners. It is an amazing city for miles and miles of trails out into the woods and along the water and around Djurgården. It's a great way to see the city

I'm going to Stockholm in October. I hope the weather will not be too cold!

Myself and my girlfriend went to Stockholm last October and had a great time. Stockholm has probably been my favourite short break destination. I did find Stockholm seriously expensive. One night I paid about €10 for a glass of beer.

We got the Stockholm card when we went to visit the sites. Usually I'm not a fan of these cards but a good majority of the sites are on the card and the cost of getting into these places was so high that it definitely made the card value for money. We made our money back on the card very quickly. Also, public transport is included for the duration of the term of the card. A subway ride in Stockholm works out about €4.25 so it's pricey and having that included on the card was a big plus. You might be able to find a discount code online for the card as well.

We used to go out to Sodermalm for food. Sodermalm isn't too far from the city centre but the food is quite a bit cheaper than Gamla Stan prices.

We had fantastic weather in October. It wasn't warm but it wasn't cold either, we had sun and blue skies and the leaves were all changing colour. It was lovely.
