Just inherited 2 acres of land in Co Limk and wondered what sort of a return I'd expect if I rented it to a local farmer each year? Its normal agricultural land, suitable for grazing/silage etc..

    Doesn't seem like very much!!

Anyone got any suggestions what to do with the few acres?

That's farming I'm afraid. I'm on the east coast and €100 an acre is about all you can get for renting out grassland.

Plant some firewood for yourself or sell it.

I always smile when non farming folk (no offence intended OP) actually relaise the returns on agricultural land..
Was at a wedding some time ago and a fella was soputing on about buying poor cavan/leitrim land for €5000-7000 an acre and renting it for €1000 a year
I mentioned that the actual rental value was €100 and his get rich quick farm ownership scheme fell apart quite quickly

If you have the time you could divide it up a bit, 1 acre for firewood, some veg and raise a few pigs & chickens on the other acre..

I re-seeded and baled 20 acres this year at a cost in excess of 7 grand. Not one penny has it returned yet. Zero zilch nothing.

I have 200 bales of top quality silage in store and after a month of advertising not one phone call.
That is the return from Agricultural land. Now the bales will sell eventually. Will I make back the 7 grand? Will I make back half of it?

Yet if I put a for sale sign up it would sell in a heartbeat.

The joys of farming! 4 acres came up for sale near our farm lately. Everyone was saying to me sure you couldn't go wrong buying that! Reckon I would have got it for €40000 or a little less. How long would it take me to recoup that money from it?

How much interest will you give or get on 40000?
what will the land be worth in a few years?
How much can you make on it in a few years?
Realistically its not as simple as it will take me 50 years to recoup my 40000. your 40000 is well invested if its worth more than what you will receive in interest on that 40000 or the cost of the interest you are borrowing plus the 40000 on that in a time down the future . just because you bought it now doesnt mean it cant be sold later on.

I'd say 200 if it's good grass, 150 is what good ground is worth, but such a small aprcel will have a limited market :(

€300 but 2 acres very small area. Might suit a family with a pony or horse.

Neighbouring farmer may use it. U probably could do a trade - local farmer may tidy it up and fence it in exchange for his/ her use of it

Land is worth more (monetary) sold and money put into interest account but more people have a strong attachment and desire to own land

There is a big fuss about farming over the last few years and college courses in Agri have become very popular but most farmers struggle to survive and only do so based on grants

    Could u build there?
