Hey guys, looking for a laptop for autocad, Photoshop etc, found this in pcworld, http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/ACER-Aspire-V7581PG-156andrdquo-Touchscreen-Ultrabookandtrade/315318/104.9

Seems extremely good for the price anything I should note?

No graphics card and you'd need that for cad. It's fairly poor for the price too if you dont need the touchscreen.

It says on the webpage it has an NVIDIA GeForce GT720M, which should be fine for CAD.

The screen resolution isn't very good though (1366 x 768) and I don't think you'd get a lot out of the 4-cell battery, especially if you're using the touchscreen.

    Open to correction though :)

About the price, the 500 GB SSD is the most expensive component in this laptop. It's usually cheaper to buy a laptop without an SSD and upgrade it yourself.

Sorry bout that, my phone only showed it as one page long and I assumed they would have mentioned graphics if there was any. The 720M is fairly poor and might not be good enough for CAD a 640M would be much (45%) better. There is a 32GB SSD in the laptop though, not 500GB, the 500GB is a regular hard drive.

You'd get a laptop that is as powerful for less than €800 or a decent laptop for what you want for €800-€900 if you were willing to buy online and drop the touchscreen.

The webpage also specifies "Storage is provided by a 500 GB solid state hard drive (SSHD)."

My main recommendation would be making sure you get a laptop with a 1920x1080 screen. This will be important for your Photoshopping activities.

Read the sentence after that. It says is uses a solid state cache and a 500GB regular hard drive. There's a massive difference between a SSD and the SSHD as they call it. A simple give away is that SSDs aren't available in 500GB, if it was an SSD it would have to be 512GB.

Aaaah okay. So the problem is that they call it a "500GB Solid State Hard Drive (SSHD)" (which it's not) instead of calling it a "500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD)" (which it is).

The way it's written is unambiguous and wrong. You're right though - it will come with a hybrid drive. Thanks for the info.

I don't think I can contribute any more other than saying that I don't think this is the laptop for you because of the screen resolution and battery and price.

Thanks for all the info guys, food for thought and I knew it was too good to be true, I need to brush up on things, haven't purchased a laptop in 4 years. Definitely be up for buying one online and dropping the touchscreen.

I'll steer clear of this one.

That Acer is not suitable for your purposes. The i7 is a dual core ULV processor, the performance is only comparable to a regular Core i5 CPU.

In a serious CAD machine, you'll want a workstation grade GPU which is officially supported by the software manufacturers. Certain rendering features are disabled in AMD and Nvidia consumer GPUs and then there are issues with unstable/buggy drivers written for maximum gaming performance.

For €160 more, you'll get the 17" PCS Vortex IV, Haswell Quad Core i7, Nvidia Quadro graphics, full HD display:
