Herr Schmidt's Edelux LED light + Original Nabendynamo works well for me, reliable and bright enough for dark Kildare lanes as well as standing out in Dublin commute traffic. Fit and forget.

FWIW I had a fresh look at dynamo lighting a couple of days ago, and the current best front light seems to be the Philips one, unless you need USB charging, in which case the B&M Luxos U.

spacycles do a range of built dynamo wheels. Almost any Shimano dynamo hub will do; the more expensive ones just have better bearings and tiny efficiency savings.

I have the CREE light with the wide angle lens and I tapped off the top half. Even on the lowest settings this gives me a nice spread of light but without blinding drivers.

Best of luck with new gear. Phillips light gets good reviews.
Have done a few solo 200km + spins this year and like the idea of not having to worry about batteries when on long solo spins.
Decent lights are requirement with some early/late season audax events.
Have used my mtb light for a couple of early long distance spins and it's excellent but need it for mtb.
Will probably buy what I linked earlier

Haven't heard any reports from the "Eye&Ear hospital" of large numbers of motorists reporting blindness from bicycle lights? :p

Though dynamo lights are more environmentally friendly and longer lasting on 200k spins, i can't see any reason for a typical commuter to use one over the newer led lights which can be charged from the USB port on your PC in work....

neither have i even though i spent 2 days in hospital this week with head and back injuries but that a whole different story.
i do have to great battery lights and there much brighter than dynamo but no harm having all three.
by the way if you intend buying dynamo wheel buy new;)

Dynamos are dear to buy but you have light on demand which is also useful on dull and wet days . I tend to leave mine on all the time :D

I contend that this is not, in fact, a really good lighting system query. I put it to you that it is, in fact, a query regarding a really good lighting system. The prosecution rests.

…I’ve been on jury service lately, does it show?

More seriously, as regards the benefit of a hub dynamo for commuting, personally I think it would be very useful. My commute is relatively short at a little over 11km each way, but there are days when I need to use my lights for the full journey both morning and evening. Depending on traffic that could mean over 1 hour of usage per day. For LED lights that’s not a lot but for other lights that could mean a substantial draw on the batteries and they might or might not last an entire week on one charge. That’s not a big deal, but it becomes so if I forget to charge one of my lights and it dies mid-journey. To avoid that I carry spare batteries, a hassle which doesn’t arise with a dynamo hub (but also an option not available with many USB-rechargeable lights).

It’s a mistake to assume that everyone has access to a USB port at work (I do usually, but not always). It’s also a mistake to assume that everyone uses USB-powered lights (I don’t). The lights I use I chose based on their ability to make me visible and to light the road ahead, whether they were USB-rechargeable was down the list of priorities. If I were buying lights again today I think it would be difficult to find USB-rechargeable ones that satisfied my other criteria. So for me a dynamo hub would make a lot of sense for my commuting. So I'm interested to hear of how dynamos have worked out for those people on this thread that are using them.

Can I ask is that a light to make you visible to others or the road visible to you?

A light to see. Also with an eye to Audax.

Minane bridge/Roberts's cove will be in a glow tonight hopefully

Had first spin this evening. About 3km with street lighting and 33km on unlit country roads. Lumpy route around Minane bridge.

Light is excellent, plenty light to see road with nice beam pattern. Max speed was55km and always felt safe. Without measuring would estimate illuminated distance at 60-70m.

As a user of a 1000 lumen mtb light, typically at 500 lumens, it is completely different. The pattern and intensity being completely different. The dynamo light is no where near as bright but it isn't a problem and I much rather pattern while also keeping other road users happy.

One potential downside is a front puncture being a little more complicated.

For commutters a dynamo light would be the business. However if fitting a rear dynamo light over voltage protection is required, which is fine if you have carrier/rack but a bit tricky/ungainly on a typical road bike.

If by any chance your out for a spin tomorrow evening let me know, I'll be out around 6 and can belt down towards carrigaline or belgooley to see it in action. If not tomorrow then another evening next week.
Cheers and congrats with your purchase.

Just bumping this thread to ask how you're getting on with your lights trying to decide between these two if it's worth spending the extra on the Son. The 5 year warranty is tempting. If I get the shimano I'll in all likely hood get a rear cxp33 on an ultegra hub as well.
    Shimano DH3DN80 Mavic cxp 33

    Son delux Mavic cxp 33

I was all set to get a B&M luxos U seemed to be the best light out there and the usb port was a plus for touring and audax. A new Son Edelux has appeared in the last few weeks and looks even better than the luxos. No usb but for the little I'd need it back up usb battery pack will be as handy. Having a better light is more use.

That tail light was the only firm choice I'd made getting the fender version. Forgot to add the Son light comes with better wiring than the B&M. Looks much more heavy duty

I have Shimano dh-80 since November and find it excellent. Have used on long distance cycles, up to 185km, and it's been good.

It's a mavic 319 rim and dt swiss spokes. If you have the budget I'm sure the SON is excellent and will be more durable in the long run.

I've about 2k on mine to date, wouldn't expect to put any more than 4k on it per year.

I have a 60 lux b+m and it's excellent, really nice light distribution. I also have a 1000 lux mtb light and while way brighter I prefer the dynamo light.

I'm sure the lights you linked will be excellent
