Altering a suit jacket down a size

I have a suit jacket that I feel is about a size too big for me. It feels big around the shoulders and is a bit too wide across the back. I want to bring it to a tailor to see what they can do, but realistically is it possible to alter a jacket that drastically? I'd want them to essentially change whole shoulder part.

The length of it is fine, as are the sleeves, its really just because the shoulders sort of bunch up like there's too much material there.

Its from a nice Hugo Boss suit so don't really want them to mess it up. Then again I'm not wearing it in its current state so what harm can it do!

Hey, This site has the exact answers your looking for

    http://mensstyleblog.blogspot.ie/2010/02/what-tailor-can-cant-do-part-1-suit.html

Can the shoulders be taken-in (made smaller)?
In theory, yes, but this means reconstructing the entire jacket and can be very expensive (in many cases, more expensive than the jacket itself). For this reason, make sure you buy a jacket that fits properly in the shoulders! Cost: not worth it

Can a jacket be taken-in (made slimmer) in the sides?
Yes! This one alteration can make a significant improvement in the fit of the jacket. Cost: $25-$60

Good luck and make sure you pick a good Tailor if you decide to go :)

Couldn't be done. At least in the place I took it this lunchtime. Bringing in the sides would not have really fixed the shoulder issues. Thanks though.

Of course this can be done! I've had it done professionally and i have also done it myself before (I am handy on the sewing machine). Just find a good tailor or go to a dress-maker and ask them to do it!
