Digital Displays & odometers

    Hi guys,
We're looking to get a 7-seater. The Renault Grand Scenic II (pre 2009) is an option, but I've been informed that there was an issue with the digital displays on them, meaning alot of them had to be replaced. The chip that keeps track of the mileage is built into the display unit, so when this is replaced you start again with a fresh odometer. So you can drive away in a car thats done 100k miles, and its as if its brand new - and this is all done above board by a Renault dealership (which is ridiculous)
I know this is the case for this car, it has me wondering what the story is with others. Our other options are....

    Newer Grand Scenic (2009 on)
    Citroen C4 Grand Picasso
    Maybe a Ford SMax

Can anyone give an opinion on these, can the mileage be trusted on any of them? I know possibly any car can be clocked if you get someone who knows what they're at - I guess I'm wondering if its as blatantly simple to do as with the Renault I mentioned. It's specifically the 3 cars above I'm wondering about.

    thanks a mil in advance

Tread carefully with pre 2009 Scenics, they don't have a great rep. We had a 2006 Megane (which would share a lot of Scnic parts) which had a lot of little issues over the years, we now have a 2010 Grand Scenic which has not put a foot wrong. You can see Renault learned from their mistakes and made big steps to improve reliability.

Any car can be clocked, so do you homework carefully.

The only genuine reason to be able to alter the mileage and reanult dealers won't restore the original mileage on new display. Makes one wonder what their reason is ?

Ours went. Before it did (It generally flickers for a bit beforehand) I had the mileage entered by another garage nearby on to the simi car check system. That coupled with the recent NCT (a couple of weeks before iirc) and Renault Belgard had no issue resetting the mileage to what it was before. The issue I'd imagine arises with people that have no proof and could well be just picking a figure. The garages would basically be clocking the car for you.

Either way they provide you with a receipt as evidence it was changed at X date so if you have a service history you can show mileage to a certain point and unless you did colossal mileage between the last evidence and the clocks being replaced , I'd say most people would be happy with all the evidence.

As for the car. Outside of the dash, its been regular servicing and 2 balljoints that I changed myself in 5 and a half years of ownership and 110,000 km's
