Bad idle

For far to long my parents car has had a bad idle, it's very irregular and it's as if the engine nearly stall every few seconds or so. This evening I also noticed while drivign and not accelerating the car would kind of lunge/brake a bit more the odd time, like the engine was stalling I guess.

Dad say there's new plugs, filter oil etc in there, a friend thought maybe the crank position sensor could be gone? Any way of checking this or findig what may be at fault?

    Make?
    Model?
    Year?
    Engine?
    Any warning lights on?
Has anything been done to try and sort out the issue?

With the engine light on there will be stored codes, get these read first and take it from there or you will just end up replacing part after part until you fix it.

Where do you read the codes from? It's not exactly a very modern car

you need diagnostic equipment to plug into the obd port on your car. If you cant do this yourself, a local mechanic should be able to, or if you give your location, a boardsie might be able to help

Being a 01 Daihatsu it might not have an obd socket. It might have an led on the ecu to flash any stored codes. If its a single point injector maybe a good cleanup of the butterfly with carburettor cleaner using a toothbrush might help.

That'd be because of the Yank influence. They've had compulsory OBD for petrol since 1996. My '99 Jag supports OBD-II over a pulsewidth modulation carrier. Very '80s Detroit.

Anyone know where the ECU might be hiding on one of these? I googled but had not much luck really.

What are you going to do with the ECU when you find it?

See if there's an LED on it and if its got a fault code.

According to Autodata code reading is via diagnosic equipment only.

Diagnostic scan is only way to go...

Highly highly highly unlikely theres a n LED on the ECU to tell you whats wrong.

Search for the OBD plug and then search for someone with decent equipment to get it plugged in

I think you would be better off starting with the basics first. Check the ignition system thoroughly, then look for cracked or broken rubber/plastic pipes, especially any attached to the manifold. Check the air filter and make sure the correct spark plugs are fitted. 99% of faults are down to broken connections or poor maintenance.
