Just seen this on Fifth Gear

They had the old VW Scirocco (10 years old) 190 bhp when new but has 177 bhp 10 years on.

They put Redex in the tank with the required litres per bottle as per the instructions.

They the changed the oil and filter + air filter.

    Then new plugs and leads.

    Result : 188 Hp.....just 2 hp off new.

Any other way of helping build back up the HP??

I'd be more interested if they didn't bother with the redex and done the same test to see what results would be given

Wasn't a corrado was it? 5th gear only out since 02

If the car is in bad need of a service then that's plausible.

According to them Redex gave a 6hp gain!

I've not seen the show but I imagine given what you've said it's a Celica they used

Would've been more like 20 years old if its a scirocco

Corrado vr6 would be around that power

    1995 Corrado V6 :)

There were also testing the 1hp drop year theory hence my 10 year old mistake.

Anyhow seems the work did the trick all be it £300 worth

They checked the hp after each step though . So after just the redex it regained 6 or 8 hp iirc.

Id have been interested in seeing it in a different order or each step individually myself but theres no way to have 4 or 5 cars that have spent 10 years in identical conditions and tewatment to try them on.

From 30 minutes in, seems best improvement per £ is redex, £5 got almost 6hp improvement...

I think horsepower recovery could be a fancy new word for a service, the car clearly wasn't well maintained mechanically.

was it 190hp on that same dyno 10 years ago?

190 is what VW reckoned it had from new

dynos should only really be used for relative changes imo - ie, dyno run, do some tuning, dyno run, and make comparison (that work gave me +5hp etc).

Comparing absolute values in inherently flawed, as there's inconsistency between dynos.

And while they are at it, they should probably try to clean throttle and spray clean maf sensor to regain those 2 extra horsepower and increase their mpg.

Doesn't matter, they used the same dyno to take a reading after each test so the results are relative.

stupid test imo. different days will give you different results.

that much dyno runs would probably clear it out abit anyway.

eg on one dyno my gsxr made 98.8hp in febuary
on another on a moderate day made 109.98 hp
    on a 28 degree day. 106.4 hp

if its not the same day same dyno its pointless.

Iv'e used Redex before and other makes and they seem to clear out any little problems but nothing helps a car like a good regular service.

Unfortunately a lot of people never even check oil, water , tyre's etc. never mind make sure their car is fully serviced!

    injectors run a huge pressure.

half a litre of redex in 60 litres of fuel will bog all

thats a mix of 120 to one

They did the test the wrong way round. It should have been dyno, service, dyno, redex, etc

First thing done to any car should be basic maintenance, then start checking out modifications/fuel additives
