I'm expecting delivery soon of a WWAN card for my laptop (like a 3G dongle, but internal) that claims to do GPS. I'd like to find some software to generate .gpx track files as I walk down a route. Linux might do too.

If your GPS can provide either an NMEA or Garmin PVT stream, then there are loads of apps that will do this and/or display the track on a map at the same time including one you probably have already ... Google Earth.
