Thinking of dumping SKY Sports and buying Setanta package - to get BT - and upgrading to HD with the saving. How do I get RTE and BBC in HD ? SKY site is confusing. Thanks.

BBC one and Two HD are FTA so you dont need a Sky Sub to receive these, You can also tune your Sky Box to receive ITV HD FTA with the other channels option. RTE HD isnt, you need a subscription to SKY, otherwise a new dish setup for Saorsat or go with an Aerial with Saorview.

Saorsat needs a different dish and LNB and is looks at a different part of the SKY, you also need a setup box for this. You dont get TV3 or 3e but you do get RTE one, RTE Two HD, RTE News, TG4, RTE Jnr and a few RTe radio channels.

Saorview is your better option, with the Aerial you get RTE ONE, RTE Two HD, TV3, TG4, 3E, RTE News, RTE Jnr and a few RTe radio stations. Again you need a Saorview TV or Setup box to receive these.

From my reading of what you said I think you want to keep basic Sky, drop Sky sports, and add Setanta.

If you already have a HD Sky box you should already get BBC HD and RTE2HD without the need to sign up to Skys HD pack. If your box is not Hd capable then you would need to get one that is.

Sky's HD pack just gives you the HD version of the non free channels.

HD is only really important if you have greater than a 32" screen and sit close.

If you do take the Setanta Pack you will get BT Sports 1 & 2 HD and ESPN HD without having a Sky HD subscription.

As already mentioned BBC 1&2 HD,ITV HD,CH4HD and RTE2HD are all FTA - thus a €15 per month Sky HD subscription may not be required.

I'm confused. How do I receive the HD without a HD receiver from Sky...or..how do I get an HD dish etc without a subscription ??

Or are you referring to me signing up to UPC ?

You did say in your first post that you were thinking of dumping Sky so I assume you have a Sky HD box. Thats all you need to get the HD channels mentioned above apart from RTE which you should be able to pick up with an aerial.

In summary you just need a Sky HD box or similar apparatus (and TV obviously) to get the BBC'c, ITV's, Ch 4 etc

If you currenly have a Sky box that is not HD capable, then you will need a HD capable box to view any HD content. You could pay for a HD box from Sky, or it would be cheaper to get one yourself from an online seller.

Your existing dish and cabling will work for HD. Your TV would need to be capable of displaying HD. Any TV bought in the last 3 years should be OK.

Just asking here instead of starting new thread, I have a Humax HD Freesat box, wouldn't turn on a few days ago, instead of getting it repaired, if I buy a sky HD box without subscribing, will I receive BBC HD channels,ITV HD & CH4 HD ?
    Thanks :)

As said you can,but TBH you will hate it, you cant move the channels around so you will have to scroll through scrambled channels to get to the channel you want.

You also cant record without a Sky Subscription.

Id buy another Freesat box or go for a combo box which gives you Irish Soarview (TV through the Aerial) and UK Freesat.
