Self catering/DIY wedding venue?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for advice and ideas from any of you who have gone down the self catered wedding route ( by self catered I mean hiring our own caterers, not doing it ourselves, that would be disastrous) :) I've looked into a lot of the places advertised as self catering but most of them are houses/castles that require you to hire the entire venue for usually on average 6000 for 2days/1night. This is not what we're looking for as we just want a laid back BBQ/buffet style meal with approx 100 guests. I realise that a lot of hotels offer this as a package but seeing the price difference between what the caterers charge and what the hotels charge is a little off putting :( I'd really appreciate any tips from people who have experienced this kind of wedding and any venue suggestions would be great. Thanks! :)

Check your local sports club (rugby / GAA etc...) for a good sized hall that you could use, then source a caterer.

Many are probably already used to hosting family / corporate functions and may even have their own caterer partners.

I've looked into a couple already, we've been looking at the caterers who specialise in doing a pig on the spit with a BBQ to go alongside (fiancé has his heart set on this idea, and I think it's pretty cool too) so a lot of the rugby clubs don't suit due to the need for an outside patio/garden area to cook. Sorry I should've mentioned that in my first post  But it's one area we probably should explore a bit further! :)

Where in the country are you?

We'd be happy with anywhere in Leinster really, half the family are Dublin based and the other half Carlow, so anywhere that didn't require over 2 and a half hours travel for either side would be grand!
