Hi. I'm a student sharing a house in Carlow with 5 others until the end of May 2014 and was wondering as to what would be the the most cost effective option with regards to setting up an account backdating to the start of september 2013 until the end of may 2014?

Whats the minimum duration of the contract?

We currently have a meter and running electricity and our landlord has given us both day and night meter readings.

    Hi tipp_Gunner,

Thanks for your interest in Electric Ireland. Registering an account with Electric Ireland for a day/night meter requires forwarding us the meter readings; the first bill would then be for usage from that point.

A bill can be in the name of two people, and up to four additional people can be named on the account as authorised contacts.

There is a €300 security deposit (refundable after 14 months - six/seven bills, or refundable earlier if the account is being closed earlier). Setting up direct debit eliminates the security deposit. There is no contract for a standard account registration, and a closed account can be reopened at a later stage if needed.

We offer discount price-plans to new customers who pay by direct debit - 8% off units used, plus an additional 2% off units used if the customer sets up online billing (which eliminates paper billing). This price-plan is a contract, which expires on 30th September 2014, and if the customer leaves Electric Ireland, a €50 exit fee applies (this would not apply to a customer simply changing their address but remaining with Electric Ireland though).

We offer further discounts again for customers who have both electricity and gas accounts with Electric Ireland - gas would be from the gas network, not bottled gas, so it depends on whether the customer lives in proximity to the gas line.

With a day-night meter (also known as NightSaver) the unit price is lower (0.1018) between 11pm and 8am in the winter (effective when the clocks go back) and between midnight and 9am in the summer. The day unit price is higher (0.2060) with this type of meter, so customers will reap the value benefit of the NightSaver rates if they use a minimum of three units every night during those hours.

Please do let us know if you would like further info.

    All the best,
    Una
