Budget Laptop

    Folks,

I am looking to buy a laptop in the 400-500 range and was looking for some suggestions. I want to stay within this budget as I did spent a chunk of money on my last one three years ago (Sony) which has now had it's second HD failure. Anyway in terms of what I need:

    1. Minimum of 15.6 inch screen
    2. HDMI out (not too sure if all laptops have this now)
    3. I'm not too concerned about weight.
    4. I'm not too concerned if it has Windows7
    5. I'm not concerned about capacity as I have plenty of external HDs.
    6. I'd like something that isn't too slow.

The laptop will be used for general web surfing etc - no gaming.

Given my own issues with Sony and the brothers with his Toshiba, if I can avoid these brands, even better.

    thank you
    Conor.

Lenovo if you want something that will last for a hundred years, can ward off herds of Zombies with a single blow and still fire up afterwards.

HD failures and almost never the fault of the laptop as most are supplied from completely different manufacturer than the laptop and a fault of the Sony at all .. e.g. Seagate/Samsung/Hitachi/IBM.

Personally I'd keep a 100km distance from anything that had a Dell or HP badge.

    Thanks Was.

I read some of the other threads yesterday, and there are alot of recommendations for either:

    Lenovo G580
    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/LENOVO-Z580-M81KAUK_1336876.html

    Acer E1-571
    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ACER-E1-571-NX.M09EK.033_1468770.html

Both are the same price, however, the Acer has the i7 chip and the Lenovo the i5. Would this make much of a difference? The Lenovo has alot of positives over the Acer - more RAM, better barrery life, UBS3 ports and an easier keyboard.

I am veering towards the G580, unless there is a particular reason why I should go for the i7 chip?

    thanks again,
    Conor.

For Surfing and Stuff you will notice Zero Difference in an i7 vs i5. Hell my macbook still runs a Core2Duo and I do Web Development/Graphics/Video Editing/Light Gaming still.

Acer Vs Lenovo, I'd go with Lower Spec Lenovo any day of the week over the specs of an Slightly higer spec Acer (cheap creaky build).

Thanks Was. I didn't think I'd see much of a difference, given what I need it for.

    Much appreciated
    Conor.
