Plus, GTA has a history of its own now, a path from the overhead madness of the original to the revelatory genius of GTA3.
Its arguable, mostly by me, that that is the biggest leap in the franchise.
Red dead redemption was, for me, the biggest advance in story telling.
I really like GTA 5 but there is an element of comedy and satire that the more sober 4 and 5 seem to lack, something that was in 3 and VC in spades.
Maybe the dlc for GTA4 fixes that, don't know as I have yet to play them.

Sonic wouldn't really have to be stealing cars and such, as he coluld probably just outrun them anyways...
