Short Notice

So today at 5.45 i get a call from my area sales manager to inform me of a new promotion that has to be implemented before open of business tomorrow morning...We close at 6 o clock, and there is further 10-20 minutes of closing the store(re cash, paper work etc) which i don't get paid for...Atop of this this promotion which hasn't been prepared has to be done...The said promotion was supposed to be implemented on Thursdays morning, thus giving us Wednesday to prep it...

I was like a cnut after the call, had a little hizzy fit in the office after...Not very impressed with the ridiculous short notice, also i was lucky to have someone else working till close, unlike at least 5 other stores who would have had only one person working between 5-6...

Was i reaction of calling my area manager every name under the sun and getting very annoyed and angry unjustified?

Also what sort of notice would be reasonable???

    Cheers for your thoughts

Short notice can be very normal in a lot of jobs. Especially in dynamic envrionments. In my work if something goes wrong I would be expected to be sticking around to get it sorted even if takes few hours. This is the nature of my job and I am ok with it. If i just leave and not do anything looks bad on me and could cause problem for other areas in the company so important I react well.

You being annoyed can be justified but having a hizzy fit is ridiculus, grow up and welcome to the real world. Your best option is to tell your manager you will get it done but emphasise its on your own time and want to take this time on lieu or use if when you need a favour to get off early some evening.

What you hope to gain by calling your manager every name under the sun?

Sometimes in my job I stay on hours after close of business to get work done. It is likely that in your contract there is a stipulation around an employee being required to stay on hours past/do work above and beyond duty to ensure the fulfilment of their role.

I don't think you have much recourse in this situation, and in my opinion you overreacted as it wasn't exactly a large request.

Justified or not, it was unprofessional. In lots of work environments, you would simply have had to suck it up.

What did the area manager say when you calmly said that it would take you X extra hours after closing time to do the work and asked whether he wuold be giving you overtime or time off in lieu for them?

With regards to how much longer, their attitude was sure get it done fast and your'll be out fast, and whenever you ask about time in lieu its always put on the long finger or the subject is changed
