Looking to get people's opinions on Castle Dargan. On previous threads the general consensus is that its wet but their working on the drainage system so should get better and that in summer the course is savage.

I dont mean to brown nose but I was looking at Kevin Markham's photos and the course looks in great shape even when comparing boom years 2007 to present day 2013.

Surely the course must be in a lot better shape in the winter after all the drainage work carried out to when it first opened? From the photos at least it looks like a cracking day out for €25.

It is wet, no getting away from that. If you know that before you go I doubt you'll be disappointed tbh. I played the k club smurfit last December and I'd say it was on a par wet wise and that didn't spoil the round for me. You know what you are getting with inland golf in the autumn and winter cd is no different.

If I was looking to play golf close to Sligo town, I'd pick Rosses Point or Strandhill ahead of Castle Dargan. Strandhill is usually good value for a links course and will always be drier.

Nice enough course but nothing super, Co. Sligo and Strandhill would be my choices if i was joining a club around there not sure which though.

I met a member (Aidan) at the Westport Insomniacs event in June, and he reinforced the consensus that Castle Dargan gets very wet. Part of it's to do with the land it is built on, for sure, but the drainage issue has been running for a while. I hope they can sort it out. I like the course. As stated it's not Rosses Point or Strandhill, but then no courses are, and you're evidently not looking for links. It's an enjoyable and very playable parkland.

Give them a call and ask what's being done/planned about the drainage.

PS. Played Strandhill on Sunday and had perfect weather. Got loads of photos and will put them up as soon as.

I think this is a very fair assumption. Last winter I got out one of the most underated courses in the country IMO, Slieve Russell, and to be fair it was wet under foot but then again it was the second week in February, to be excepted really. All inlands get wet including Palmerston House which too can get very wet.

The problem to me seems to be its situated in Sligo beside Strandhill & Sligo, two of the driest under foot courses in the West given that they are links and CD is unfairly described as a bog as a result! Unfortunately I wont get chance to play it this year but its on the list for next year, albeit in the summer months when I'm free! The course seems to have matured well some Kevin's photos anyway.

Will look forward to them, really enjoy Strandhill. Funnily enough was out on County Sligo recently and the place was in terrific condition with the rough cut back somewhat making it very playable but yet challenging on lovely calm day, the sun even made an appearance on the back 9. It must be my favourite links in the country.
