    Hi Folks

I am in a relationship with a girl that I pursued for some two years and eventually convinced to go out with me. Everything's great. We get on great, enjoy each others company and the sex is fantastic. In fact, I love this girl and love being with her!

    BUT

    There's always a but....

She has an anxiety problem stemming back to childhood issues. What this means is that sometimes she goes low and has panic attacks especially after drinking.

She can also bury quite a bit of drink and turns into a drunken mess..... in fact a disgrace and consequently swings VERY low for a few days after. This means she can't be around people other than her family or myself and needs reassurance etc....

I can understand anxiety problems. I've never suffered them but I can understand them. What I can't understand is why ANYBODY would want to drink to such an extent when they fall as low as she does afterwards. It baffles me and frankly, is annoying me.

I've asked her numerous times if she's going to go "to town" on a night out and get snapped at for daring to take an interest even though it's me who has deal with the consequence.

It's basically got to the stage that we are going out over the weekend and I am already bracing myself for three days of her being depressed / messed up and me having to help her through it.

Am I being unreasonable? Do I have a right to say, "it's the booze to that extent or me" ?

Alcohol has a big effect on mood and people with anxiety and depression need to be careful with it as it is a potent trigger for a downward spiral. You need to sit her down and talk to her about it if it is affecting your relationship. Anxiety and depression is hard enough to manage as it is. Heavy drinking is like pouring petrol on the situation.

People who have anxiety / panic attacks feel more anxious and panic-prone after drinking than regular folk.

A lot of the anxiety after drinking is because of low blood sugar afterwards. Eating two Dairy Milks / bottle or two of Coke before going to sleep will help a huge amount with that.

People with anxiety can drink because it relaxes the nervous system and they feel normal (but drunk...) for that time, if they drink enough. If you want to see if this is the case, see if she'll settle for just two or three drinks.

Real solution: stay off the drink!

Patch: eat suger after drinking, she'll feel much better the following day.
