Bored and starting to get depressed.

I have been in my job for about 3 years now, and up until about a 10 months ago I loved it. I was traveling all over the world working on loads of different projects. Last November I finished up with my last project and since then I have been on the bench.

I now work from home, making sure I am up to date on all the new software and occasionally might get a script to write here or there, but really my entire weeks work can be done in a day and the rest of the time I am doing nothing.

To say I am bored is an understatement, I feel like all I see everyday is the four walls in my house. Nobody seems to understand my frustration, they are all like well aren't you lucky to have a job where you don't have any work. My company has basically got me on reserve for this big project where I did a lot of the initial ground work, but there doesn't seem to be much sign of project starting anytime before the new year if at all. The problem is it is such a big contract for my company they don't want it to be disturbed by not having me available when it starts. I still get paid, but my bonus's are halved, but I still have an above average salary.

I don't want to leave my job, but I am getting so bored that I really don't know if I have a choice. I get head hunter emails everyday, but at the same time I do like my job when I am on a project. The real kicker is that nobody I work with is from Ireland, so I essentially have no social life and most of my childhood friends I have drifted away from and the ones I haven't are either away or are very busy and can't be meeting up all the time.

I have spoken to the company many times asking to put me on a different project but they are very reluctant as we don't have a lot of solid contacts at the moment.

There is no chance of me losing my job, but it's getting to be almost 1 year since I did any real work, they have sent me off to a few training weeks which has broken up the year a little, but right now I am going stir crazy.

I don't know what advice I expect posting here, but would love to get some feedback.

Have the given you any timeline concerning when you'll be back to that project? It's seems such a shame, if they value enough to pay you then same just to be kept on the back burner until they really need you.

Have you spoken with them about how the current situation hasn't been working out, that you've had orther offers but you're rather stay with them and could they possible throw some more work your way?
