hi guys id appreciate any help with this..my 01 passat ive only realised has no abs or airbag light. I dont even have the car a week and ive discovered several problems. The air flow meter has to be replaced also after only 300 miles. The car was nct in april and the previous owner of course says the car was perfect when he sold it to me..amazingly all these problems only arise when ive paid him all my hard earned!! Ive brought it to my local mechanic to run a diagnostic but his machine was unable to communicate with my ecu which i thought very strange..any help appreciated TIA:)

Worst case scenario someone pulled out the lights in the dast to hide prooblems,so you 'll need to fix the lights and problems - chances are the problems weren't THAT expensive either i.e ABS speed sensor or loose Airbag wiring under seat,it could also be ABS pump and Airbag ECU.

What diagnostic tool did he try to scan the car with? Which controllers could it not communicate with ?

it was a solus pro i think its snap on manufactured. It couldnt establish communication with the car at all..i think that the passat actually doesnt have bulbs to remove in the dash.if im right i think they are leds soldered into the dash instrument panel and the air bag light and abs light are obviously two different systems and the bulbs are soldered on two different circuits..what you reckon?

Sorry by bulbs i meant LEDs,i've seen it before - a mate of mine recently discovered that a 'mechanic' removed the ABS light to cure the ABS problem without telling him (or i think even checking) to see what the problem was.

First thing i would do is find someone with VCDS (VAG com) and try scan it with that and see if you can find out what the problems are and work from there.

Has the car got an aftermarket radio fitted?

If so then unplug that and try to scan again.

I tried scanning with the radio completely removed and still no communication.. its all very strange. The car is driving perfectly well. I will try vag but my gut tells me that the car was interfered with electronically. So much for the nct. Thanks for the suggestions lads

I did yes all seems in order except for 1 5amp fuse. When I pull it and replAce air bag light flashes. In actual fact I fitted an air flow meter today and the air bag light activated as it should only once though. Turns out air flow meter was the wrong one so have to wait till tomorrow till I get the right one. It'd be some crack if after fitting correct air flow meter everything comes right. Highly unlikely I know but here's hoping

did you get a qualified mechanic to check it out before you bought it?? surely he would have checked if the airbag or abs lights were working??

i did but he obviously missed it..i didnt cop it myself either :(

i fixed the passenger side window reg motor today and noticed two extra wires running into the locking mechanism..im thinking in days gone by somebody had problems with the c/locking and whatever they did may have interfered with the electrics of the car..the mystery deepens..
