I've taken golf back up after 12 years away from it and am researching courses in South Dublin as options for joining as a full member. Has anyone played Ballinascorney Golf Club and if so can you give me your opinion on the course/facilities etc? Advice on other South Dublin courses also appreciated.

Bring your football boots to ballinascorney

    Google footee.ie for further info

The Ballinascorney GC website shows the course as being inside the M50 near Marlay Park http://www.ballinascorneygc.com/mysitecaddy/site3/contact_map.htm

footee.ie appears to be Dublin City GC. Two separate clubs surely?

I think technically ballinascorney still exists. The members left & took the name with them but pretty sure they took residence in an existing club.

The old ballinascorney became Dublin city golf club & now is the home of foot golf alright.

Budget is the first question I'd be asking you, how much are you looking to pay for your annual sub?

In or around €1,000 for a year but also see that some clubs are offering that for 15-16 months.

Have you looked at Palmerstown house as an option. Recently opened up as a club and it's getting its GUI affiliation as we speak.

I believe it's €1000 for 2014 or there is a deal there for joking me until end of 2014.

Lisheen Springs (formally South County). €1080 for 12 months. It's where I'm headed next year.

There is a thread called "Palmerstown house" on here and from all reports the place is a great option if in the market for a new club.

Yes. Ballinascorney G.C plays at Oldfield, beside St Columba's College in Rathfarnham. About ten years the owners of the old Ballinascorney club evicted the members after a dispute over membership fees. A good few of the members took the name and set up shop at Oldfield which had been in operation for a few years before - mostly as pay and play I think. A new club (Dublin City) was established at the old location up near Bohernabreena; that closed at the end of last year and some of the land is being used for the Foot.ie thing. Sheep on the rest of it.

Oldfield isn't great but it suits some people.

You are spoilt for choice nowadays compared to twelve years ago. Lots of options in that area and if Ballinascorney is asking €1,000 I would suggest you look at others as I think there is better value to be had for that sort of money.

I'm in Lisheen and can recommend it but you should look at Stackstown and Rathfarnham which are also both close to Marlay Park. Slade Valley is close to Lisheen (so is Dublin Mountain but its not great.) Hazel Grove is just beyond Tallaght on the N 81. Tulfarris is the far side of Blessington as is Blessington Lakes.

There's more than half dozen courses down the Naas Rd that would all be glad to have you (I think) Castlewarden, Beech Park, Grange Castle, Killeen, Palmerstown House, Millicent, Craddockstown, Naas....

Down the N 11 you have Glen of the Downs, Bray, Greystones, Charlesland, Roundwood, Kilcoole and I'm sure some others I have left out.

All of these are within pretty easy range of South Dublin. Some are flatter than others, some drain better than others and some are in better financial shape than others. My advice would be to use the autumn/spring period to check them out. If you plan to play year round, then I strongly recommend you don't decide until you see how they handle wet weather. There is HUGE variation.

Balinscorney is a 9 hole course with a small clubhouse. The members are very friendly and sociable. They usually go on safari to Portugal or Southern Spain each Spring. The course isn't great but they are working on it. I'd be surprised if it costs €1,000. I think they had short term offers available and suggest you phone or call there in person. I can put you in touch with a former captain if you PM me. It wouldn't be in the same league as Palmerston House but it's very handy if you just want to pop up and play a few holes.

I seen a deal on their website for €860 you get 16 months membership which seems reasonable.
