Had some poor scores on the quiz on my app. Not sure if its the wording or what.
Referring to the photo what it doesn't mentioned was he never said anything about a provisional ball.

You missed the important part - "Before he plays the teed ball". He never made a stroke at a 2nd ball.

If he returned to the tee and hit another ball, it is not classed as a provisional. It automatically becomes the ball in play. A provisional ball must be played prior to going forward to search.

Read my post above. That is not the issue at hand here. He went back to the tee, bent down, teed the ball up and then we can presume someone shouted "found your ball" so he never made a stroke. He picks up the teed ball and goes and plays his original. Simple.

    Bloody confusing eh?

Not Confusing. You can not return to the tee and play a provisional ball. If you return to the tee and play another ball then this becomes the ball in play even if you then find your original before 5 mins has elapsed. In the case above the 2nd ball was never in play as he only teed it up but never made a stroke at it.

Not just this question but a lot of the questions from the R&A quiz lack punctuation, fragmentation, and are difficult to read for most joes.

Thought this one was pretty obvious, teeing the ball up does not put it in play only when he hits it is it the ball in play.

You would have been correct if he had hit the ball and then the ball was found.
I have done it a few times where the ball dissapears when it should be a easy find and u say to your mates keep looking while i head back or while u are letting the group behind thru. Inside 5 mins and no other ball hit then fine.

Small clarification, the ball is in play once you make a swing at it; i.e. you dont have to make contact with the ball.
Typically a non issue, but for beginners and/or foursomes, a fresh air means the ball is in play, so you cant re-tee it, adjust it, touch it at all, etc.

Don't forget the Kevin Na scenario....."swing at it" must mean with the intention of hitting it
    Q. A player begins his downswing with the intention of striking the ball but decides during the downswing not to strike the ball. The player is unable to stop the club before it reaches the ball, but he is able to swing intentionally over the top of the ball. Is the player deemed to have made a stroke?

    A. No. The player is considered to have checked his downswing voluntarily by altering the path of his downswing and missing the ball even though the swing carried the clubhead beyond the ball.

I think the point off this thread is the wording is complicated.
Does anyone think about.com is a little clearer? Is it accurate in its description?
