Citroen C5 - risk of particle filter blocking

Hi all i need some advice on a 07 citroen c5 its giving the risk of particle filter blocking and the engine service light is on..

I have put a new DPF filter in it and the DPF sensor + piping and the EOLYS fluid has been topped up but yet the warning light still shows up on every start up.

the car has been to the main dealer before the DPF filter was changed and put on there computer and they told me that it was showing no faults or error's but if i put the new filter in it should fix the problem but it's still there.

Has any one else come across this problem before as i need to get it sorted before it can be tested.

    all advice welcome..

Had the same issue only for me it was just the knock sensor causing a fake reading (error's never came back). What you need to do to reset it is:

    Start the Car
Turn off the ignition and wait ~ 90 seconds (until you hear the car fully turn off, you'll notice the speedo arms move a bit and radio go quiet).
    Start the Car
Turn off the ignition and wait ~ 90 seconds
    Start the Car
Turn off the ignition and wait ~ 90 seconds

After the 3rd attempt, the error should go away (did for me) and has never returned (I was getting used to starting up a diesel again so it was partially my own fault). If it doesn't go after the 3rd attempt, do it until it does - be patient with the 90 seconds wait, listen close for the "dying down" sound (like a laptop turning off really).

NOTE: Also have a 2007 C5, 1.6 HDI. It's a common issue, the error itself is quite vague and can mean plenty of things. The HDI engines commonly get a lot of carbon build up, might I suggest a Terraclean - it's €135 under a 2.0 car and takes 1-2 hours but overhauls the engine for idle, MPG and DPF.

Just back from trying it out its still giving the warning and the engine service light is still on.

I got my uncle to put it on his diagnostic computer and there still no faults found so he put it on live feed and noticed that the injector pressure and flow is fluctuating at idle but holds strong when held on a rev.

He said it would be best to get the injector's tested as if they are letting too much diesel in or not enough it would more then likely set off the warning too.

It's booked in in the local diesel specialists for thursday and ill find out then if it is them or not.

ill report back with what news i get thanks for the help :)

What did the new filter cost if you don't mind me asking? ?

Hi Truckermal it cost me €182 posted to my sisters house in the north i bought it off ebay.

Citroen wanted €750 euro for a replacement one or €500 to remove and remap the car so id never have to worry about it again.

I would of liked to have it fully removed but i didn't have the €500 to spend on it.

Iv been told today that there is a local place that would remove it for €350 i think they said if i cant get it sorted i might just go for that...

That was reasonable enough I would remove it altogether, more MPG and more BHP its a win win!:D

Yeah that's the plan next i wanted to remove it a long time ago but its the mother's car and she wanted the parts changed as it was cheaper just show's it would of been better in the long run to have it removed.

I might just pay the money myself to have it done as i hate to see them giving trouble lest then its peace of mind that its not going do it again. :D

When you fit a new dpf and top up the additive tank on these you need to reset the dpf system with dealer diagnostic equipment.

1)How many miles has it been since you replaced the dpf and topped up the additive...?

2)What diagnostics equipment does your uncle use as there maybe an option in there to reset it for you..?

3)As for injectors what injector correction values did he pick up..?

Hey Row the additive was topped up by Citroen about a month and a half ago and i fitted the dpf just over 2 weeks ago iv no idea on how many miles though.

I dont know what computer and that he has but i should see him tomorrow and ill find out ill also get him to put it on it again so that i can take a note on the injector correction values.

Citroen would have reset the additive if they topped it up so all you need to do now is reset the dpf.....Also (if he can check it) in live data get him to check the differential pressure across the dpf while taking it for a good hard drive.
A new dpf should have low differential pressure...:)

    Hi All
I have a similar problem with my 2009 C5 1.6hdi which began with going for a Service at an award winning Citroen Main dealer @ 85000 miles. Since then the "service exceeded by 100/200/300 etc miles" warning message comes on.

I returned to Citroen 30 miles away and got it reset and rectified however it returned after a couple of starts and I returned it once again to Citroen who reset and rectified it but no joy..... I had to return a third time.

By now I was also getting the Particle Filter Level warning message and alarm and now the Main Service light has come on too. So they fixed it again but told me the service light was still on but would go away after a couple of miles I have now driven a couple of hundred miles and its still there along with the particle filter message/alarm every-time I start!!!

So... my question is anyone interseted in buying a C5 with the service light on.....?
PS:I tried the 90 seconds thingy but it didnt work either

Sounds like there not sure what there at..
If your getting a "additive low" message then you'll need to top it up and reset the system...this could also be flagging the Dpf fault.

What part of the country are you in as there maybe someone here who can help you out..?

    Hey Row
Thanks for the reply! I was informed by Citroen that the Particle Filter Additive was topped up and didn't need any more additive. I am in the midlands, Mullingar or Ferbane are my nearest Citroen service agents!
    Thanks again

Lol, of course he would. That's his job.

Honestly this is a "how long is a piece of string" question.

    That's hilarious.

I was in a 407 1.6hdi lately, a very similar car, with 400km on it, original turbo, etc.

It'll last another 50 years and 5 million km, or it'll break tomorrow. It depends on how you (and any other owners it's had) have treated it.

I'd imagine it'll last somewhere between the 2 figures.

We have a 2008 C4 Picasso with that engine. That light came on, so I checked to owners manual, which instructed me to drive at 80kmph for 20 minutes to clear the filter. I did that, which sorted the problem.

It looks like this is caused by a lot of town driving and short stop/start runs, so the long run sorts the problem.

It is a problem that will recur, but following the instructions in the manual works. It clears the fault, and clears the fault history.

Hey sorry for the late reply.

It's a hard question to answer as it depends on how the car is taken care of.

My mams one is currently sitting at 256000 KM and is still going strong on the original turbo she drives close to 700km a week and the car gets a full service twice a year.

The only things that we have had go wrong with the car is things that need to be replaced after a certain milage like the dpf - turbo seals - a few sensors and bushings things like that.

If the car is taken care of and serviced within the stated milage the car could go for as long as you want it to..I'd say they said that to you as they will make money selling you a new car and would all ready have some one lined up to buy yours as it is still low enough milage on it.

    Hope this helps

The aul fellas is rolling about with 305,000km on the clock. Only real issues I can think of is a gammy handbrake cable and a starter that needed to be reconditioned.

    Original turbo, clutch and DPF.
