Not mine, but the missus car.

Its a 2007 1.2 3cyl petrol polo. roughly 95,000 km's on it. she's owner the car 4 years, it has a full service history with its last full service in August this year.

the car as long as i remember it always felt a bit "twitchy at idle" like an almost un-noticeable misfire once every so often, but i never gave it much pass just calling it a characteristic of the 3cyl.

Lately (say the last 2-3 weeks) the "misfire" or sensation of a misfire has became much worse, the car now feels a little uncomfortable/ unstable at idle. also when under load, say 90km/h in 3rd gear the power becomes slightly intermittent and causes a slight judder.

Now once or twice lately it cut out directly after cold starting, but it would always restart ok and run alright. Last night i cold started it and it cut straight out. i went to restart it and it wouldn't restart. on my third attempt it started but was running very badly, revs bouncing from 800-1200rpm. i gave it a bit of a rev for a few seconds and it found its feet and the revs became steady. but the car overall is running quite poorly.

the plugs were replaced at the service in august. the cars vitals all appear ok, oil and coolant are full and a good colour. the check engine light is not and never has been on.

any ideas :) probably going to have to take it to a garage for a check over this week. haven't time to have much of a fiddle myself now we're back in the college year.

Misfire may be just a faulty coil pack, but those engines are prone to issues with the exhaust valves leading to low compression.

Codes, codes codes. Could be one of the sensors, or a leak somewhere in the intake. An OBD-II scan will reveal.

will there be fault codes even with no EML?

    Quite possibly.

Had a similar problem with our old polo 2005 reg it ended up being a bent valve in the engine.

that doesn't inspire confidence... i've read a lot online of burnt valves, but not bent!
