Sorry folks, its probably been done a million times, but my gf wants an Ipad for Christmas, but i'd be inclined to get her a tablet but she's having none of it!!

I need to convince her otherwise.

Can anyone help, or give me a link where i can compare both and show her the error of her ways ? :)

You might be better letting her get the ipad. At least then you will here none of "I should have got the ipad!) You won't be responsible for fixing it either if something goes wrong with the ipad. The ipad is an easier device to use IMO than an android tablet although you might prefer yourself the "open" system of android. But still, I think the only way would be to bring her to a big store like pc world or Harvey norman and show her the latest androids in action and then she might be convinced.

Of the high-maintenance kind, isn't she?

why do you want to convince her to get a tablet from another brand?

what does she want to do with the tablet? what devices does she already own?

give her a few tabs on a night out and let her make up her own mind.

What kind of Tablet are you talking about ...

Samsung Galaxy Note/Mega etc..Sluggish, Variations on OS between devices, Buggy etc...
Surface Tab ... EPIC fail (there's a reason MS lost $900m on them)
Surface Tab Pro .. Yay a real Computer but 2x+ the price of an iPad and can get viruses just like a real PC (which you will be forced trying to fix when you really just wanna get jiggy with it).

Personally I think your GF is much more sensible than you are.

Forget the discussion and showing her a website just give her what she wants or you're dead!

your gf is correct. I've a tablet, most awful piece of kit I've ever bought (no joke). My gf has an iPad, works flawless. and in particular, works brilliant with her iPhone

I regret the day I ever bought the android tab.

    just my opinion

There are some rubbish android tablets, but there are also some excellent ones. Stick with the Nexus ones and you won't be disappointed. They are also half the price of the ipad.

You can get them cheapest direct from google, but they only sell hardware to the uk annoyingly. So either gotta use parcel motel, or order off a reseller and pay a bit more.

She has a Samsung Galaxy so I'm hoping that'll help her avoid the ipad.
Like with like and all that.

I'm thinking there should be some advantages to having an android phone and tablet?

Or maybe she wants to avoid Android completely given her experience hehe

Why not just let her get what she wants ?

What benefits do you see in a tablet over the ipad ?

Tbh, go with an ipad. There's no way she'll turn around after a few weeks with a tablet and go "oh you were right honey, this is muuuuch better". Wimmins don't work that way :P

Just tell her, she can't get Youtube on the iPad (except the few vids offered in h.264) and the matter is settled. ;)

Not that many in fact. Gmail still syncs up and all.

If you're looking for a plaything tablet the iPad hits a lot of checkboxes soundly. Samsung, of the Android, is to be considered the best of them. Expandable memory, IR blaster, some samsung proprietary features sure (only works with samsung TVs, if you want to do "airplay" like stuff etc).

Simply not liking it "because its Apple" is a bit of a letdown. To be frank, its considered the staple tablet for a reason. It's durable, its fast, you can get oodles of different accessories for it, and the interface is just very fluid.

Grant you, the iPad is not inherently expandable, and doesn't offer USB, but it makes up for it. Airplay and Airprint functionality make other tablets feel kinda silly when this tablet can so easily print and broadcast its feed. And on a personal note, I haven't been comfortable with Android. I had a honeycomb A200 Acer and since Jellybean came out I just havent been able to keep up with the interface changes, which for the most part I found to be rather pointless.

If you don't want Apple, Amazon just announced the Fire HDX which will be competitive. Good speakers, higher res screen than the iPad Retina, and based on Jellybean's kernel.

Personally I prefer a Windows tablet but I'm a more productive/nerdy gentlemen. For ease of use and simple "lets just do this" type of interface, the iPad really is the ideal platform. I've considered the mini a few times, but for now the iPhone takes care of my itch for most tasks, I frequently take advantage of Airprint and Airplay, and Siri is more useful than most people consider: "Convert 3 fl ounces of water to grams" "set a reminder tomorrow @3:00 to take out the trash" "set a reminder to call Jill when I get home" "set 5 minute timer" "launch waze" "launch camera" "enable bluetooth" "do not disturb mode" "convert $530 to Euros" "Book a table for 3 at Oscar's Bistro" "Directions to pharmacy" "What's the score on the Liverpool match?" "Integrate the cotangent of x-squared" "how heavy is 1 gallon of salt?". Spoiler alert: it's 10.3lbs, and she was eerily fast in her response.Siri makes the headlines when it offers to help hide dead bodies etc., but its actually extremely useful in the interim. Android has similar features, but its not up to quite the same scratch.

I just don't understand the argument "but its Apple". It's an Ad Hominem attack. The product speaks for itself. It certainly has a better track record, all around, than any of it's competitors.
