Apparently, the District Court poor box garnered €1.9 million in 2012. Anyone know if it actually goes to the poor? Or which charities benefit?

Or is it simply another income stream for the State?

The charity depends on the local DJ, I have never seen that money paid into court just the receipt presented from the charity. Usual charities I have seen are SVP, Simon and cancer research.

The Law Reform Commission did a consultation paper and report on the poor box a few years ago; the consultation paper included information on which charities benefit (appendix E)

I have seen defendants coming in to court with receipts form various charities as proof of donations. This was usually accepted by the District Judge and contributed towards getting a lenient sentence.
