Do you use podcasts? I have to say, I've had an iPod of some description since I was 15 (ten years) and last night was the first time I thought to investigate podcasts. The premise seems pretty good. But a few of the first ones I listened to have a fair deal of advertising worked into them.

I've heard they can be good for fitness (there are C25k podcasts). I primarily wanted to use one to catch up on current affairs here and abroad as I rarely have the chance to read the paper.

Anyone enjoy them, or hate them. And why? Any body got any podcasts they couldn't live without?

Or how many, like me (until recently), have never felt compelled to look? Probably should include a poll but no idea how to from a phone.

    Stuff You Should Know

I always get one off of stuffyoushouldknow.com and listen to it in bed. Always really interesting.

I'm taking note of some others people are posting :-)

The Ricky Gervais podcasts are comedy gold.
The origin of Karl Pilkington can be heard on their xfm podcasts.

    Gagcast (Gaming)
    Engadget (Tech)

Yes I use them for language learning. For which I have found them to be excellent. You can effectively study and walk / learn and exercise at the same time. Been using them for a long time now.

I've got a load of BBC Radio 4 podcasts on my phone. The In Our Time series with Melvyn Bragg is pretty good. Also, A Brief History of Mathematics is one I've listened to recently that's well interesting.

Doug Stanhope's podcast is excellent but infrequent enough,Bill Burr's Monday morning one is pretty good too.

Nerdist can be interesting depending on the guest, and the Second Captains podcasts are great if you're into sports.

Literary Disco is good fun if you're a reader.

Used to listen to a few tech/gamer podcasts a few years ago, stopped now.

I'll listen to them if I'm only a long flight or something, other than that I don't really bother.

Never miss 5 live's world football phone in.

Also if you're in the extremely intelligent percentile, as I am, you can take a youtube video which contains the audio you like, go to vidtomp3.com, convert it and listen to it on your phone. (for this you will need a micro-sdhc card with converter, costs about a tenner, or a bluetooth connection with a lot of patience)

So you can have a lol-fest like the Howard Stern show when your ears so demand it.

Gracefully accepting your praise in advance.

Tim Vickery's a pleasure to listen to though

Adam & Joe are well worth a listen for utter nonsense

Show's on a hiatus, but think they're still available for download.

made up jokes are hilarious, as is the pierce brosnan stuff.

you should look up timeghost, armstrong and miller's stuff from about 5 years ago. it deals with stuff in the news back then but still worth a listen.

some other very good suggestions here to look up though.

And if you're not in the extremely intelligent percentile, as I'm clearly not, you can just use a USB cable and connect your phone to your laptop that way, costs about free because you'll have gotten one with your phone and doesn't require nearly as much patience as fiddling about with microSD cards.

    This one's on the house.

Oh, never really listen to podcasts, there's some great stuff on internet radio stations though, and you're guaranteed to find one that does news and current affairs. I mostly listen to classical music though, but boy does it eat battery life!

Most of my commuting time is soothed by podcasts.

Too many to mention, but the standout ones are:

    Radiolab (NPR) - brilliant, science-ish people-ish show.
More or Less (BBC R4) - exposing flawed statistical claims
Making History (BBC R4) - interesting history stuff
The Report (BBC R4) - detailed investigation of current issues
File On Four (BBC R4) - similar to above
5 Live Investigates - Hilariously shouty presenter thinks he's an investigative journalist. Sometimes interesting stories, but pretty skin deep level of investigation.
In Our Time (BBC R4) - detailed look at historical figures or ideas
Car Talk (NPR) - has me laughing out loud. Good car advice too.
Friday Night Comedy (BBC R4) - News Quiz & Now Show - brilliant.
R4 Comedy Of The Week - hit and miss
Everyday Ethics (BBC Ulster) - Sometimes thought-provoking, sometimes a trainwreck of shouting bigots from both sides of the northern divide.
Today In Parliament (BBC R4) - my daily politics fix
Documentaries (BBC World Service) - fascinating stuff from everywhere.
Seascapes (RTE) - marine related news and trivia

Totally agree been listening to Josh and Chuck for years!

    Informative and humorous!

BTW - There is also a Podcasts Forum. :p

Some of my faves (with the RSS links):
I've tried "Stuff You Should Know" before, and may try it again, but I stopped because episodes were too long. I have limited time to listen to podcasts, and appreciate those that get to the point and don't waffle. If there is going to be waffle, it had better be excellent waffle e.g. The Bugle.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Cannot stress this enough, worth listening to from the beginning when they start to discover their radio producer Karl and his ****ing weird world views

Problem is it's so good makes other radio/podcast comedy seem pretty drab

Found them on iTunes but the cost money :(

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is amazing, particularly the way he captures the mood and psyche of the peoples and events he's describing.

I love the Amp Hour too, but it's probably only relevant to people who're interested in electronic hardware.

Football Weekly by the Guardian! Absolute gem of a podcast for any football lover!

I'm another SYSK listener. Fantastic podcast, I've been listening since early 2009 and they always entertain. My other go-to ones are Dan Savage's Savage Lovecast, the Judge John Hodgman Show and Welcome To Night Vale. All really high quality podcasts, and they're incredibly fun to listen to

They're all on YouTube. Search 'Ricky gervais xfm'.

Loved those Adam and Joe podcasts. I still nearly piss myself from laughing listening to them for the sixth or seventh time. I really hope they bring them back some day.

I used to listen to them in work and no doubt looked insane laughing away to myself. Adam's song 'Happy Birthday Time' in particular made me look like I was having a breakdown :D

Tell Em Steve Dave and Bill Burr's are the only ones I'll listen to without fail. There's a few other interview-based ones where it depends on the guest. (Joe Rogan has shíte guests more often than good ones!)
