Will there ever be a DUB Southside regional airport?

With so many regional carriers operating nowadays with ATRs, Dash 8's, Avro RJ's etc, I wondered if there would ever be a need for a small southside airport, or perhaps an expansion of the one in lucan. Maybe at some time if the Irish economy takes off in a big way.
Obviously planning/building/expanding an airport is a massive deal with all sorts of laws and restrictions to get through. I think its an interesting concept all the same.

I think Dublin is just too small for a second airport supporting commercial ops.

If there was to be a second it would be Casement surely, and most likely a Ryanair exclusive set-up.

City is to small. if anything it would hamstring its self by splitting the numbers going to eidw, less carriers and less destinations in the long run imo

While I dont think it too small, as the likes of gothenburg has two airports, and stockholm has skavsta( stockholm's population is more than dublin though of course).

I think that with the expensive T2 EIDW now, there's no chance of a second dublin airport, would be very convenient though to avoid the northside:D

    Belfast has 2 airports.

    http://www.daa.ie/gns/media-centre/press-releases/13-01-10/Passenger_Numbers_Up_2_At_Dublin_Airport_In_2012.aspx

Dublin had 19 million passengers in 2012. Heathrow had 70 million (26 million transfer passengers) with a second runway. Atlanta had 95 million and Beijing 81 million, but they have extra runways.

Adding the parallel runway, a rail link, extra termini, etc. would mean you don't need to look at a second commercial airport until you have at least 40-50 million passengers.

Weston has it's problems with its residential neighbours and has little space for expansion. Baldonnell has much more space than Weston, but any real intensification in use would incur huge problems as the main flight paths would be over residential areas.

One of which is quite limited, but exists because they make aircraft there.

And ends up with less route variety than it should as a result.

A shame really, If the likes of WAT can operate commercial flights, surely there'd be a market for the likes of casement.

In fairness Casement is a Military field and main base for the Air corps, and as such should not be used for civilian use.

Yes its done with bigger bases in Europe but dont see the need here.

Was crazy flying into Krakow last week seeing all the Hind (Mil Mi-24) military helicopters lined up as we passed by. Absolutely fierce looking machines. But what was hilarious was about a dozen or so military personal outside one of them who started waving at us! :)

The thing about a second airport in Dublin is that it really isn't needed for the following reasons:

    - Dublin and Ireland are pretty small on an international scale and already have too many airports.
    - Dublin Airport is very close to Dublin City Center and pretty quick and easy to access compared to most international airports.
    - Dublin Airport is easliy accessed by the M50 and the national motorway network.
    - Dublin Airport has loads of space for expansion with extra runways, terminals, etc.

It really makes no sense to do anything other then continue to expand Dublin Airport. We need to focus on building the second runway and Metro North.

I agree with you Ireland does have too many airports, I suppose i'd love the thought of flying in to a small airport with quicker access to where frequent on the southside. It will never happen of course for many reasons.

Simple's. Hire a private jet in from Weston it's on the south side so should suit your needs.

Plus its a small airport ;)

They could move the handful of air corps aircraft to Shannon surely?

Its not like its a massive base with responsibility for defending Dublin city:D

Sure why not lets move all the Shannon traffic to Casement and give the Air Corps Shannon.

    "New Airport for Dublin/shannon"

"Ryanair and Aer Lingus now operating flights to Shannon East and Dublin south"
It just happens to be the same airport. EH!!!!!!!!!!!! no

There is a lot more to setting up an additional airport than just getting airlines to fly there plus the costs involved,You would have catering/cargo /security and fueling operations+ ATC to set up.
We don't have the population within the greater Dublin region for two separate airports.
