    Hi all,
I'm hoping to book a city break for myself and my boyfriend in January. Nothing tooeexpensive, so far I think Edinburgh. I was looking for any other suggestions people may have? I'm a bit wary of going somewhere in Europe with miserable weather, at least Edinburgh would be similar to home. Any suggestions very much appreciated, thanks!

I travel regularly to the UK in January (London in particular). It's not unusual at all to be delayed with snow. I've had to make a dash across London to get the only AL flight back to Dublin that day. Freezing fog has also ruined my plans on another occasion. Don't assume anything when it comes to the UK and January.

I'd go to somewhere in Central/Eastern Europe. They are well used to dealing with snow. It rarely closes airports there.

Rarely closes airports entirely, but from my experiences in Scandinavia, it can close the runway for a couple of hours and cause setbacks and delays.

Paris or Amsterdam would be my choice, more likely just to be colder than a witches... well very cold, but very pretty.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to
reply! I remember how bad the snow was in the UK in January come to think of it,so maybe Europe would be better. I have been all over Europe but never in January, Amsterdam is lovely and definitely worth considering! I would appreciate any other suggestions either, thanks again.

Has anyone ever been away in mainland Europe for new years eve? I'm thinking that could be good craic even if more expensive :-)

We went to Madrid in February 2012 - cold (generally between -7 and 0, though we went during a cold snap) bone dry and beautiful. Would very happily go there in the winter again. Aer Lingus flights weren't too expensive either.

Have never actually been to Madrid, I didn't like Barcelona at all (which is unusual I know)but I will check it out thank you!

I was in Dresden for New Year a few years ago. The Germans do winter and Christmas very well. Sausages and mulled wine and all that jazz. Dresden two hours from Berlin (or Prague) on a train.

I Was in Prague for New Years Eve last year and had a fantastic time. The Christmas markets were still open and there was loads going on- great fireworks down by the river. Loads to see and do there. We went to the Opera to see Carmen, and saw the Prague philharmonic orchestra another afternoon. Highly recommend it.
