with all the negative press of win8 is it really that bad? would u still buy windows 7pro ahead of it when building a new rig?

my first impressions is that i didn't like it but that just because i don't like change and removing the start bar when i first came i think microsoft shot themselves in the foot. But now with win 8.1 out how do people feel about it? Haven't tried 8.1 myself yet so just looking for opinions from those that embraced win8

is it time to adapt and move from win 7pro or stick with what you know best?

Install this http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ or one of the many free alternatives and you have a supercharged Windows 7. I've had Window8 for a year now with Start8 and have had no issues. BTW, Windows 8.1 won't bring back a real start menu you will still need something like Start8.

If you don't like the missing classic start menu then you wouldn't like 8.1 either, because it's still not back. However, if this is your only concern, this can be remedied with a variety of 3rd party utilities.

If yo're wearing a tinfoil hat and do not like the notion of surrendering contol of your computer to Microsoft (and by extension, to a variety of shady alphabet agencies) through Windows Store and "Trusted Computing" then you should stay away from Windows 8. ;)

There are other threads where we can discuss the impact of Windows 8 on matters of pricacy or sovereignty and why Trusted Computing marks the end of an era: it effectivly kills the PC as an open hardware platform. ;)

Other than that, Windows 8 constitutes a notable improvement in certain areas over Windows 7 but it does have its glitches. It certainly is a lot better than its reputation.

And according to Microsoft if you get Windows 8 you will be able to upgrade to windows 8.1 for free.
