Air Filter Missing?

Hi all:

Renault Megane.

Is the air Air Filter tube Missing?


Went to start yesterday, engine turns over then cuts out, with white/grey smoke coming from under the hood.

So I open up bonnet and it seems that a filter pipe is missing?

I looked through engine but there's no sign of anything dropping off.

Is this the air filter pump missing? If so, how is it attached each end?

(I'll check the manual in the meantime as well).

Looks like the tube for the air feed in the grille to the airbox is missing, the air filter should be in the black housing, well I presume it is as I'm not familiar with renaults. Car should still run without it providing there are no sensors in the missing tube.

How the heck could that disappear from under the bonnet?

There doesn't seem any clear way for it to drop out. There have been a load of cats around the drive, but I dont think they would be able to lift the hood.

That's the question.

Cats are actually extremely smart creatures alright, could get from below, but I'd rather blame mice or (even more) someone from weasels family. :cool:

From the second pic it looks like it was cut off. There is some material left.

Looks to me like like the clips that lock it in place are at fault. They aren't jubilee clips at either end. The air filter end looks like its a rubber strap holding it in place, and at the front of the grille its one of those lock mechanisms you find on tool boxes and the like.

if that one opened the rubber strap at the far end wouldn't hold the hose in place

Yes that's weird. I don't know much about car mechanics but I do check oil and water and tyre pressure on a regular basis. So when I opened up the bonnet yesterday I just thought WTF! There's a big space where there should be something!

Maybe there was cats sleeping under the bonnet and they used it as a scratch pole til it was gone.
