I think it really depends on the charger and how many volts it can handle. The US use 120v where as we use 220v.

A lot of US stuff is 200/240v but it's usually 60hz rather than our 50hz. Check the charger input voltage, the drill will be fine.
I know a chap brought a Makita drill and impact drill kit home with him (cordless) and he's working away with them.

You just need to change the plug for charging AFAIK

You will need a new charger as it will be 110 or run the charger off a transformer (yellow box) so not really practical on the other hand I have brought back lots of drill/screw guns but then I have spare chargers

I looked at a lot of tools in NY a couple of months ago and they were mainly 120vAC chargers, but there definitely was also 230v ones.
So check the charger input voltage before you buy.

I bought a cordless dremel in the US, the input to the charger was 110v but the output 10.8v which of course was the battery volt so just purchased a step down converter like this one http://www.ebay.ie/itm/STEP-DOWN-VOLTAGE-CONVERTER-240V-120V-45W-USA-TO-UK-/200634977671?pt=UK_TravelTickets_Accessories_RL&hash=item2eb6c6cd87#ht_2137wt_932
plug battery charger into it and have not had any problems charging the batteries at all.
