Hi so we want to come to Dublin to buy a new used car and trade in our old one, as it's so much cheaper than where we are.
Can you give some recommendations for good garages in Dublin, we'll be coming from the west.
    Thanks

You will probably get a better/more informed response if you ask in the Motors forum.

A lot will depend on what car your looking for?

    Anywhere around Ballymount. :pac:

Seriously though - look for the car, not the dealer. ;)

Trading in a car is taking a double hit on both cars.

Best to sell your car privately and with cash in hand you will get a much better deal on newer car.

Its more hassle but financially better.

Where are you located currently OP? There's many good dealers nationwide, not only in the pale.
What car where you thinking of getting?

We are in Sligo, have been looking around here but the selection is not great and I'm pretty sure we could get a better deal in Dublin.
We are not fussy on what make, but it needs to be diesel, hatchback or estate and average tax bracket.

Surely somewhere like Galway and surrounding area would be closer especially if you need to return it to the dealer for warranty work?

As others have said, you need to draw up a list of about 4 or 5 different models that you are interested in buying and do a search on the likes of carzone.ie. You then see which dealers are selling them and then do some research on the garages selling then before arranging to go view/test drive them.

That depends on the car they're selling really - mileage, condition etc - and the time involved, and levels of patience to deal with timewasters and dreamers.

Take selling something on adverts as an example. You stick something up at a competitive price with a detailed description and plenty of pictures and you'll STILL get the clowns who

    - Ask questions that were covered in the description they didn't bother to read
    - Make ridiculously low-ball/insulting offers
    - Offer to swap you their junk instead

It's bad enough in thread/forum form.. I can only imagine how pissed off I'd get dealing with these people ringing/texting me all day and night. Then you'd have the type who want to debate and haggle you down on every minor thing they think is wrong (real or imagined) with the car.

Plus there's the Irish loathing of anything with mileage over 100k and that's not in the "cheap tax" bracket. If you have (as most do) an older CC-based 1.9/2.0+ car with a fair amount of miles on the clock you're often better taking the hit at the dealer that putting yourself through all the above nonsense.

    ...In my opinion anyway :)

Adverts.ie is full of chancers and the swap for my adds is unreal. Donedeal is far better.

When a dealer takes in a trade in they have to cover their risks and make a profit selling it on.

Typically they will inflate price of newer car to make a trade in look attractive

The traded in car will need to be checked over advertised and sold at a profit.

Simple example dealer needs 1500 for car
    Advertises it for 2000k

Trade in car has value of 500 (trade price) or open market price of 700.

Dealer offers 500 trade in against newer car
Bit of bartering goes up to 700 euro.

Dealer accepts 1300 plus has car valued at 500.

Sells on traded in car for 700

    Total made by dealer 2k.

    OR

Sell car privately. 600 euro in pocket.
Barter hard with cash in hand by newer car for 1500 or 1600

Total to motorist 1000 for newer car compaired to trade in cost of 1300

I used the figures above as example but remember the dealer isn't going to take a hit on newer car or traded in car. He will want to make a profit from both.

But you are right it is hassle selling on a older cars

Barron Motors Terenure is a family run business, who has been involved in the used car trade for over 40 years. They are able to facilitate you with finance arrangements in the purchase of your new or used vehicle.

it is amazing and shocking that nobody can name a reputable used car dealer in dublin.

if the same question was asked about any other type of business we would have lots of replies.

shame on the whole motor trade - shower of cowboys

There is the triangle nass road, ballmount, M50
Stacked full of dealers but it be very hard to recommend any of them as they change name so often and many have been caught or suspected of very shady dealings.

The only dealers I would recommend for some sort of come back would be the ones selling brand new cars who are taking in trade ins
Nissan BMW etc and to stear clear of the dealers who dont have brand new stock. 132 reg.

Unless of course you have your own mechanic who can check out the car you want and a reg check is also done.

Its a mine field out there in the 2nd hand market with a lot of clocked UK imports

No one wants to see the OP get ripped off so its hard to give recommendations

SIMI registered dealers are a good start, but that doesn't mean every SIMI registered dealer is reputable.

If you see a car you're interested in, google the dealer. Bad ones usually have some negative reviews on the internet, good ones have nothing.

    I've dealt with 2 dealers recently, both SIMI registered;

    <snip>

Walsh Motors on the Kylemore Road, I'm fairly happy with the service so far.

Demand a cartell check on a car before you buy.

The SIMI offer no extra value where the customer is concerned. They are nothing more than a country club made up of car dealers who have their own interests at heart.

SIMI offer an appeals process if you're not happy, it may not be perfect but I know people who've used it and got a good result.

Like I said in my post, even if they are SIMI that does not necessarily mean they are reputable, but it does help in my experience.

I have been looking for a car for about 5 weeks now and have checked out almost every dealer on the south side, long mile, naas road too etc and have had some bad experiences, and only 2 good!
Sandyford Motors are brilliant, and honest.
<snip>! N4 Cars, terrible. Test drove a car and he had me back in the office trying to get a payment out of me even though I told him I was looking around first. The car was also cheaper on his site, and he tried to give me a ''good deal'' by selling it for 200 more!
I have driven in to a few dealers near Ballymount, cant remember the names off the top of my head but there are so many that try to rip you off. Car prices and opinions are all over the shop.
It is definitely worth while doing your research on the dealers and taking advice from others on here.
If only people were honest. I understand dealers need to make a profit but trying to rip people off and not caring is just taking the mick!

It's the car you need to concentrate on not just the dealer,

And in fairness what level of service would you expect if you were buying a seven or eight year old microwave , television, washing machine or other consumer goods for a fraction of the original retail price that's 5 or six years out of warranty ?

I understand cars are a big ticket item, but when the original manufacturer has washed their hands of the warranty many moons ago why do people expect the motor dealer to take up all the responsibility for wear tear and age.

Be realistic in your expectations if buying anything that's many years after manufacture and a fraction of its original new price,

buyer beware and Realistic and don't expect a new car for used prices, otherwise why would anyone buy new at all.

I can second the reccommendation for John Hayes in Rathmines.

They're around a long time which IMO is always a plus.

First car I bought off them in 1998 developed a problem with a universal joint after a couple of weeks (not really predictable) and they took it back and gave me a replacement car whilst it was repaired with no quibbles.

Bought another off them in 2004 and had it till 2010 without any problems.

They are fairly straight up with their pricing which I like. Think I got maybe €100 off the sticker price, but at least you know where you stand, and because they don't haggle you can be fairly sure they have the cars priced competitively.

    Hi.

Any opinions on Swift Car Sales on Sandyford D16? On their site they don't put any address and all viewings are by appointment.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Try Yomac or Alasta Autos i used to call into them years ago and found them decent to deal with.

Good to hear that John Hayes cars are reputable. Always seem to have nice stuff advertised at reasonable prices.

I have searched all over Dublin and believe me there are some dodgy A- holes out there. The ones I found to be nice, and not shady in any way at all were Lewis Motors in Cabinteely. The guy I saw there was very honest. And Sandyford Motors. Also Bill Sheehan in Terenure was really nice and helped me out with. He had a car come in he was putting throuhgh NCT but I was desperate and couldnt wait so I bought one off what I thought was a nice dealer in North Dublin and ended up being burnt.
I could name a whole load who tried to sell me something dodgy, or lied to me to get me to buy something.
    Shame on some of them!

I too have been checking out websites for the last couple of months as thinking of changing soon.

One dealer looked promising on their website, with decent looking cars at decent prices. I googled them and also searched Boards for them, and needless to say I won't be making the journey to Dublin to see their stock. Some shocking reviews and stories of them.

I ain't going to name them, but their name seems to pop up A LOT !!
