From January until the start of the summer I was unemployed and claiming Job Seekers Allowance.
I did what they wanted me to do as a 'Job Seeker' and I got a job and I worked for the whole summer so my claim was closed.

I have now left the job to attend a PLC to beter my education and get a solid qualification on my C.V. and they have told me I am not entitled to Job Seekers because I cannot look for, or work full time which makes sense, but here is the problem.

I applied for the Back To Education allowance which I fully qualified for, BUT I received a letter refusing me of Job Seekers. Apparently because my claim was closed (Obviously, because I got a ****ing job instead of sitting on my hole like how many thousand people do in this country) I can't get Job Seekers, and to get Job Seekers I need to be able to work.

So, in a nutshell I am literally stuck between a rock and a hard place.
If I had of stayed on Job Seekers the whole year, I would of received the back to education allowance, because my claim would of stayed open.

They are refusing me it now, because I got a job! Exactly what they wanted me to do as a Job Seeker. I paid taxes which is more than a lot of people can say. Me getting the job closed my claim and it had to be open to receive Back to Education so when I tried to rejoin, they told me I couldn't because I was doing the PLC.

I pleaded and pleaded. I didn't intend of receiving any payment from Job Seekers. All I wanted was the back to education allowance, which I have been refused simply because I'm not on job seekers and wait, it gets better here comes my little sob story.
I literally need a source of income, to pay my father to stay with him. Now I don't have that so I'm frantically searching for a job that I'll have to do as well as doing the course. If I don't get one in time I'm out. I can't stay anywhere else other than my friends' sofas for a few days max.

How can they do this, what can I do? They refuse to help me :(

Have you tried the community welfare officer?

Is your dad seriously not letting you stay unless you pay him to allow you get back on your feet?

I don't want to offend you, but that's pretty ****ty & I'd be having very strong words with him

Contact Citizen's Information or your local TD. Welfare are acting the bo**ox and should be pulled up on why they're are acting so. I suspect they are implementing the rules to a "T" and are now allowed no discretion in these times of tightening belts:mad:. Best of luck with your efforts.

Where is the Community Welfare Office? (Tallaght)
I've already started the course they probably won't care, of course I'll go and try my best but I am so low of confidence.
I have no money for books/materials and I'm already a week into the course.

My father is providing me with the only place I can stay and things are very tight. He literally cannot afford to give me any money what so ever. He needs me to pay my way.

Not only can I not support him, but I have absolutely no money to do anything. To have a drink on the weekend, to buy a newspaper or to use a bus to go and see my girlfriend.

Citizens Information have told me the exact same thing, I can't get it because my claim was closed. I can't re-open it because I'm in education.
The alternative option, to contact my local TD. Excuse me for not holding my breath.

A couple of years ago, I tried to go to college as a mature student. I was accepted on to a course.

I applied for the BTEA and was told I couldn't get it. I was 3 days short of receiving welfare.

    3 friggin' days!

So I rang and mailed my TD's. Got a question raised in the dail. Got a personal letter from the minister of education telling me to ring the woman in charge of the scheme in Limerick. Got through to her. Her advice? Pass up my place til next year, stay on the dole and try not to work.

I f*cking hate this country sometimes.

Sorry to hear your plight, but the only thing I can suggest is, stay on the dole for another year, pass your place on til next year, or get a part-time job.

    Best of luck with it.

Speaks volumes about the current state of this country and how so many peoples ambitions' in this country is that very underlined piece of text.

    Thanks for your replies.
