A friesian bull calf for €50 now will cost the bones of €200 incl purchase price by March and will barely be 200kg by then :( That is before labour etc. you'd be better off drinking the €50 now:)

thats my plan:D holsteiny calves lucky to make 30 euro.... what would they be worth and how much would they cost ya, plus the fact they could die too. Unless they are drinking over quota milk i suppose

There was a discussion about fresian cattle in our discussion group yesterday. The opinion was that at present with the factory pricing structure it is hard to make money out of same. Even if you but so called BF cattle most still go over 30 months at killing even if they qualify for bonus. You need to carry the good one to over 700kgLW before the have a chance of grading O=. Working off the base price on average you will be 24cent below and not qualify for bonus.

There is a lot of light Friesian stores around anyway. They seem to be alot less that 350kgs at 18 months. It is unlikly that these will be able to be ready for slaughter in 2014 so you will be facing two winters or feeding to finish during winter 2014/15.

If you slaughter them at 360DW and recieve a price of 3.75/kg(a base of 4Euro/KG) they will make 1350. If included in that price is a finishing period that even requires 100kgs gain(100days feeding) this will cost in excess of 300 euro in feed alone. It leaves the possible margin on these cattle very small if not non existant.

The other day abuddy of mine sent abunch of fr and jersey cross 18 to 20 month bulls to the factory and he showed me the returns.the thing is these cattle all got same treatment all the way up but when they were killed jerset crosses averaged the same as the fr yet the fr bulls cost him 120e to buy but jerseys only cost him 20.

Bigger question is did either make a few bob.
That's all that matters at the end of the day.

Disappointing prices considering I had to keep these autumn calves in on mainly concentrates and straw till may due to no grass and fodder crisis, but we were all in the same boat there. I may vasectomise 2 or 3 for my own use and genomic test a few more, one or two with parent avg ebi's to 290. Will have to confirm parentage alrite if selling as potential stock bulls, they would be ideal for some lads to use as mop up bulls and still get em off before 30 months

30 month bull game is gone all have to be under 24 months. This makes the finishing of fresians very hard. Factorys may take 24-30 month bulls in may/june but it will depend on supply. Huge gamble now with this type of animal price of these bulls is 30-40 cent below base if under 24 months and stock bull price if factory's will not take above 24 this is 2.8/kg or less.

These last posts just goes to show what I have being saying all along that anything over 80 euro for what is effectively waste on a dairy farm is madness and spending a day in the mark selling or buying them is just adding to the cost.

Fr cattle have a low FCE, poor killout and much longer feeders. There is a reason the price is what it is. There arent that many snowmen in the beef business

Was at a meeting lately where a dairy farmer said that farmers should be getting money along with Friesian bull calves for taking them off sellers hands
