Diatomaceous earth for house flies?

I've just moved into an old rural house and I've discovered hundreds of house flies in each of the bedrooms. They seem to have congregated around the inside of the windows in big clumps (maybe of 40 or 50 individuals), and when these were removed about a dozen others emerged from behind the lights in those rooms later that night. The house hasn't been lived in for about a year and apart from these flies there were two slugs in the kitchens coming up from the drain, and many, many spiders and one or two small woodlice (which I'm less concerned about).

Firstly, do people think this is a normal situation in an old house in the countryside here? Is this an expected part of rural living? I know this is a sign of a damp home but I'm not sure if this is completely unacceptable for new tenants to be dealing with.

Secondly, has anyone here any experience using diatomaceous earth to deal with insects like this? I'm thinking of buying a bag and spreading it about a little this weekend. What's the best short-term solution to problems of fly infestations?

They aren't house flies they are cluster flies, plenty of info on here about how to get rid of them.

    Thanks CJhaughey, Red Sean,

It's good to know what I'm dealing with. It's even better news to find out that cluster flies aren't really a harmful pest, just an annoyance.

I've picked up a lot of good info from the threads already up on Boards about these flies but I haven't seen anything about how long they come out for in Autumn. From people's experiences, in a normal Autumn in Ireland are these flies a problem for weeks or for months?
