Fascists murder anti-fascist activist in Greece

The murder of Pavlos Fyssas on Tuedsay night in Keratsini was a cold, calculated and planned attack by members of Golden Dawn in an attempt to regain 'control' of the streets after they had been repulsed by immigrant workers and anti-fascist activists in recent times. Two days before the murder of Fyssas, in a nearby area, a group of about 50 GD thugs attacked a group of KKE members who were putting up posters resulting in 9 KKE members being hospitalised.

The attack on Pavlos Fyssas was carried out in a coordinated action by three gangs of GD members with his murderer arriving on the scene in a car when Fyssas had been corralled by other GD members. Text messages have been produced that show the GD members planned to attack Fyssas as he left the cafeteria with his girlfriend. The member of GD who has been arrested is a brother of the local leader of GD and it is reported in the Greek media that he was on the GD payroll to be 'on call' for carrying out violent attacks on immigrants and left-wing activists (this is a common practice by GD).

The attack on Pavlos Fyssas took place in a central square in Keratsini in front of a large number of witnesses and four armed policemen who did nothing to prevent the attack. The accussed then phoned his wife before he was arrested and told her to remove all GD material from their home.

The murder of Pavlos Fyssas is the first murder of a left-wing activist by GD howeverm they have murdered several immigrant workers over the past period. The response to the murder of Fyssas has been huge. Tens of thousands demonstrated in the greater Pireas area and in many other cities across Greece. Protests were attakced by the police using tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades. Local defence committees to protect communities from fascist attacks have sprung up where they have not previously existed and anti-fascist activists are demanding that SYRIZA and the KKE take any active role in organising anti-fascist action (both have been accused of being 'fast asleep' as facist attacks have continued). There are good reasons to believe that Pavlos’ death will awaken many who might not realise how deadly serious the general situation is becoming in Greece.

Its amazing that a group like the Golden Dawn have been allowed to get away with as much violence as they have done, in modern Europe. Surely the EU needs to step in, and sanction the Greek government for there apparent unwillingness to tackle these violent fascists.

Looks like they might not get away with it much longer. The Greek PM stated earlier in the week following the killing that plans are afoot to declare the organization illegal.

Normally I would be against such a thing, but considering the amount of violence coming from the Golden Dawn, it may very well be the right decision.

Was this organised by Golden Dawn or was this carried out by Golden Dawn members? There is a difference. If it is the latter then the individuals should be prosecuted and not the party.
