Interesting letter that was circulated to clubs regarding using GPS on a phone. At the bottom of the letter they say that they "expect" the use of GPS on a phone WILL be allowed when rules are updated for 2014/2015.

It would seem like the sensible thing to do. It's just currently a bit silly that they can trust players to make a phone call, text or consult the R&A rules app without

looking at the compass or weather info (like it would make a difference anyway) but suddenly when the player is using a distance measuring app, it's a big no no.

By the sounds of it, and their effective universality these days, I guess they will remove the need for the local rule as well at the next update.

I really don't want to go there... But technically you couldn't use the R&A App.
A phone with compass, weather info etc was only allowed for "non golfing" purposes. Just a tad ironic.

About time they changed it. Shares in Garmin & Bushnell are gonna drop.

Might start having a sneaky look at the compass, I'm gonna to start laying up to leave myself my perfect direction...West - South West.

Does anyone know when the Definitions of the Rules of Golf 2014/15 is released? I assume its early 2014, but maybe its late 2013??

Not a fan TBH, it leaves the door opened for further app development that might breach the rules.
I'm thinking a caddy app with position, wind direction, slope, club selection.

Putting apps with line, grain direction, wind effect, who knows what the future holds software wise.

Do the R&A want egg on there face again having to retract a rule the once approved ie. long putters.

It states iphone in the letter, so does it mean an android phone is fine?

if someone is going to cheat, then the rules by definition mean nothing to them.
the rules are only for people who obey them, and I welcome this rule (and will now try to flog my GPS , Google maps is much better, having every object available to measure to, from)

also where does the egg come from? they'd look far more ridiculous if they hid in a room and ignored what was happening in the real world imo.

There not ignoring whats happening at the moment smart phones are not allowed simple as that.
In case you haven't noticed they're banning long putters after 20 odd years of allowing them hence egg on their face!

"the rules are only for people who obey them"
Funny I thought the rules are for everybody not just those who follow them, thats why we have penalties.

If you bought a better GPS you would have all the features google maps has and a hell of a lot quicker than a mobile phone!

I don't think there is going to be much egg, purely for the fact that I don't think this is going to have any impact on the higher levels of the game.
So if it's not at the highest level, unlike the long putters, then it's impact isn't going to be great if they were ever to do a U turn (which I can't see happening).

I would guess that they will keep the need for a local rule, Pro's aren't allowed to use DMD's at present, I think they'll keep the need for a local rule so that DMD's will never be used on Tour. This change does nothing to suggest it will be any different.

The current situation is unique, I think it's the only "Rule" that is preventative in its nature. It takes the trust element out of the game, and I feel that the rule itself goes against the ethos of golf and what they claim to stand for, that being, that it is a game of honour.

Why ban something like a smartphone where we can carry one, use it for as a DMD and not cheat without the assumption that someone would cheat if using it.

I dont really follow your point here. Updating rules is not embarrassing, sticking your head in the sand is.
I really dont see how a committee who are willing to change rules is more embarrassing than one that isnt?

There is no point in worry about people who are going to cheat when you make rules. If they are going to cheat they are going to cheat no matter what you say in your rules.

I have a 2013 golf buddy world platinum thanks.
Which GPS do you suggest that uses satellite images of the course, I'm not aware of any.
