Kitten started wrecking curtains

    Hi,

My 10 week old kitten has started clawing at the curtains in the sitting room. I've noticed the strings started to go off and it seems like he's really into doing it too (not always but sometimes).

Obviously he's fond of scratching and clawing at things but do they usually go for curtains? He also loves clawing at the couch and my other upright furniture which I don't mind so much.

I'm also wondering should I get him a scratching post cuz I don't have one yet. I heard that it really depends on the cat, like some of them don't use it at all! Obviously it ain't so cheap so I'm wondering whether there's an alternative to a scratching post or a cat tower.

    Thanks!

I've two scratch posts plus a cat tree and the kittens I'm socialising still climb the curtains
It depends on the cat I'm afraid

You could make your own cat scratching post but to be honest I looked into it for our fosters and with the cost of sisal rope, it's no cheaper than buying one. Have a look on Zooplus - I always find them cheaper there than in the pet shops. And go for one that he will be still able to stretch out fully against when he's grown. The little kitten ones are pointless. Oh, and he'll grow out of climbing the curtains, I promise!

Edited to add: Oh and keep an eye on Maxi Zoo's facebook page for notice of their three day sales - sometimes the cat scratching posts are half price.

HA!!! Welcome to the cat lover's world. I once caught my little darlings playing Tarzan on my brand-new nets!!! I'd just put them up and went out. I returned soon after as I'd forgotten something. There they were having a great time swinging on the nets!!!

They had scratch post, catnip, toys and went out too. I STILL had a two-cat wrecking crew...

The only thing I can suggest is a water gun. Squirt the cat every time he goes near the curtains. He'll soon get the idea.

My cat does this too. I've consistently been telling her off every time she did it though and she rarely does it anymore, although she hasn't stopped completely. She used to climb up on them but she hasn't done that in a while at least. I think this is just a 'thing' that some cats insist on doing. :/ My girl has plenty of scratching posts, including one right next to the curtains. She uses those too, but sometimes it just has to be the curtains it seems..

Yeah, I was gonna get a scratching post or one of those small cat towers but after spending so much already on all the cat goodies and food and vaccinations, I'm starting to watch my pennies now.

I will definitely have a look at their facebook page and Zooplus - I thought Maxi Zoo was a bit more expensive than other pet shops (their staff is amazing though!)

When my cats were little they were unreal for going up the curtains, but there was an offer one day in lidl/aldi for a 3 tier scratching post for 40 euro, I've seen similar ones cost up near 100 so it would be worth keeping an eye out! We keep it in the middle of the floor and have no trouble since with curtain climbers as they have someplace high to sit and survey their kingdom!

You can get hanging scratching pads that you hang off a door handle. My cats much prefer these as they can swing off them and attack them. Makes a wonderful racket at 3am, but it might be worth trying.
