Fireplace install question

    Hi folks, just have a question about a fireplace installation... I am changing a fireplace in the living room for a different one, the thing is that cast iron centre piece on the new fireplace doesn't connect with the fire-back, leaving a gap of about 1.5 inches... I have some heat resistant cement, and am wondering can I use this to fill the gap left between the fire-back and the cast iron part of the fireplace.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated..

    You should be using fire cement not heat resistant cement they are different products fire cement comes in a tin premixed like putty.
    If the gap is that large you should pack the gap with fire rope and then fill over with fire cement.
    Both products are readily available in any builders merchant/ plumbing suppliers
