Suckler Cow Support Scheme

I see in today's IFJ and tuesday's Indo a bit of mooting about this. IFJ claims that a temporary scheme similar to SCWS will be put in place for 2014 in order to stabilise losses being made in Suckler Farming with a further new scheme to come into place from 2015 onwards which will pay based on improvement measures carried out on farms such as those that are in the current BTAP scheme.

Was speaking to someone I know, in the know who says that a straight suckler cow premium is definitely off the cards and that submissions have been made which suggest that the budget be used instead for to make payments for genetic improvements such as 5 star bulls, SCWS measures such as disbudding, meal feeding, recording calving difficulty, weights at sale time, weaning etc. They have also received submissions suggesting that payments be made for reseeding, paddocking of suckler farms, and drainage. (Not capital grants but they will make these measures qualify for parts of payments). he said that nothing is off the cards and the decision is due to be made over the next 10 days and that there might even be an announcement at the ploughing if it can be sorted in time. Final response was that the payment will be made to reward those who have a good productivity and are producing quality beef animals in a "teach a man to fish and he will have food for life" manner. They must be reading this forum because I said that about a month ago!!

I saw someone on here, on another thread, said they had already been able to input the data required for this years beef data program. I think they said, through ICBF.
I signed up for the program on Agfood online, before the May deadline.
When I try to enter some of the required data, on ICBF, the system says, the dept of Agfood, has not yet notified ICBF that I am in the scheme.

What the fug is going on?

no completely different, when you log into ICBF there should be a heading called "BEEF DATA PROG" bottom left corner, click on this and i takes you into the area where you can log info under following headings

    Calf Information

    Record Sire
    Record Calving Ease

For calves 5 months of age and older:

    Record Docility
    Record Quality
    Dam Information

    Record Dam Docility
    Record Milk Ability
    Stock Bull Information

    Record Bull Docility
    Record Functionality

    Same here.

I assume that all is ok and it's just that the system isn't fully set up yet!

So those with non-breeding stock will be left out of the loop again.

All to be welcomed though for the future of the beef industry in this country.

Sure you be Simon C for all we know. :-)

It sounds like a combination of the SCWS and the beef discussion group requirements.

Would want to be more than 45 per cow though to actually stop fellas from getting out of suckling

In case you are reading this Simon 250 a cow would stop part time farming being an expensive hobby.

    Fixed your post there Joe.

The one advantage of being a breeder.... You can breed your own cows.

The dearer they are the better.

    You'll be learning Junior !! :-)

True Joe. I breed an awful lot of my own replacements, but here is the thing, you will have ones not breeding well enough, ones that will not go in calf, ones that get hurt and all sorts of other reasons.
Also if you are looking for the top prices you will use mainly a terminal sire so you may hit a year with a high level of bulls from the maternal sired cows. My point is that ALMOST every suckler farmer has to buy in at some stage for any one of a number of reasons.

A fair price for stock would be far preferrable to subsidies in my view. I am also not naive enough to believe this will happen. Although I am not a fan of subs it wont stop me applying for whatever is going:P.
