I'm on disability allowance. I've been told I'll never work again.
I also get E20 per week mortgage interest relief, household benefits package and medical card.
My mortgage is E450 per month. I have E25 unavoidable medical expenses each week.

This leaves me desperately poor. Despite having no car, no home heating oil, no drink or cigarettes, no broadband, no new clothes, shoes or haircuts etc. etc. there just isn't enough money to allow me to live with dignity and preserve my health. And I'll be stuck in this situation for the next 20 years until my mortgage is paid off.

It's there any allowance that I have missed? My CWO told me there's nothing else available.

Am I expected to sell my house, hopefully clear my mortgage, rent a flat and get rent allowance? That way, I lose my home and the rent would be much much higher than my mortgage.

Have you any help or suggestions for me? Thanks in advance.

I sympathise, it must be awful to hear someone write your career and future earning potential off.

Do you think you will never work again, is there anything you can upskill in which you could work in?

Clearly I don't know the nature of your disability, and it is none of my business, but I cannot think of a disability which would mean a young person would never work again.

Alternatively can you take in a lodger or rent a room in your house?

Have you discussed your situation with

    MABS or CITIZENS INFORMATION

For the most part that I am aware of, you shouldn't have €25 per week in medical expenses if you have a medical card.

Not everything is covered by a medical card.

I know that but it might be worth looking into to see if there is an alternative medication that is on the medical card, I dont come across many people with a card that have necessary medication that isn't available on it. Not saying there isn't any, just seems unusual.

Thanks a million for your thoughtful reply.

I have a severe and enduring mental illness. It's supposed to deteriorate over time. Basically a degenerative brain disease. I'm hoping for a miracle cure but not holding my breath.

I'll never work in my profession again. I'd like to think I could use something like Etsy to bring in a bit of money during my good spells. It would be great to be earning but it would never be more than irregular pocket money.

I've thought of having a lodger, it would be great, but unfortunately my health difficulties and associated quirks mean I really should live alone.

Thanks for that. I've made contact with both and we'll see how it goes.

Not unusual; they are pruning the available on the medical card list constantly. One med I needed was axed and their alternative had horrendous side effects.
Thankfully OTC price is E5 a month

So sorry re this situation and yes very hard. I made a decision some years ago to sell a small old cottage and rent. Because of disability and cost, repairs and replacing eg washing machines and genera maintenance were costing me far more than I could afford. Sometimes folk do not take that into consideration when weighing renting v mortgage.

It is surprising how little you CAN live on once you make the transition and if you have, and you sound to have a creative hobby then that will help too to keep you sane and safe.. words I use carefully......

I spend most of each day abed but have fibre art work with me. Enables me to give to others too which is important to me

And there are online groups also

I have pruned internet and phone costs via digiweb and blueface. .. all helps

And cigarettes are no great loss!

    Good luck with the search
