Recommend Media Player for USB 3.0 External HDD

I have been using a cheap as chips Midte media player with a 500GB USB 2.0 ext HDD to watch movies on my TV via HDMI cable and ran out of space so I bought a USB 3.0 1TB drive. Guess the Midte device doesn't support USB 3.0

Anyways thought I'd get a new media player as the Midte is a bit crappy to use (won't sort titles alphabetically, tiny remote control, no 'back' button when browsing). Anyone recommend a cheap(ish) one? Not bothered about wireless streaming, Internet access, etc.

I've seen a Mede8er MED400X2S on Komplett for €99 which is listed as USB 3.0 but not according to the official Mede8er website! Is it the case that some devices have USB 3.0 for transferring data (ie to an internal drive) but not necessarily for connectivity to an external HDD when viewing movies???

    Cheers!

Have a look at the sumvision cyclone micro 3... About €40 delivered from amazon uk.

Plays anything thrown at it filewise. Its a nice bit of kit for the money.

Cheers Access. Looks great. I thought the Midte was small but that's a genuine pocket sized media player! Have you used it with a USB 3.0 drive? I see in this Micro 2 forum someone reporting an issue with the Micro 3:

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible. Your USB 3.0 drive should work with any media player that has a USB 2.0 port.

Aha! Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree then with my existing drive. I might format the new drive and try again. Cheers IKYS..

Is it a portable external drive (powered by USB) or a desktop one (powered by a separate PSU)?

If its a portable one, it may be that your media player can't supply enough power. Can you hear it spin up?

It's a portable one. When I try to use it I pretty much instantly get a message 'not appropriate media files' so I don't think the hard drive spins at all.

You'll hear if the hard-drive spins. A drive that doesnt have enough power to spin-up will click and stutter as it struggles to get going.

That's just one possibility, it may be something completely different.

In any case a decent media player should work with your HDD. Go with something well-known and something that receives firmware updates.

I have the sumvision cyclone 3

    It's cheap and functional

plays almost anything, there are two problems

the first is that the remote is fiddly, really have to get it at the right angle to get it to respond

    secondly - it's very dull

I just had a taste of customised XBMC, and I am hooked, it really is a proper media centre, IMDB scores, genres, nice graphics, much better than scrolling down through computer directories

So I am getting rid of the sumvision and switching to raspberry pi for my media centre now, haven't quite finished yet, but it's not much more expensive than the sumvision
