    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows if its ok to run the car through the nct with a spare tyre on (its the same tyre as the other three just no alloy and is not a space saver) Will this be allowed?

    Thanks!

I dont see why not, so long as its the right size and not damaged. A less than pleasing aesthetic is not a fail!

Yes, it's fine to use the spare. Also, they won't fail you for not having a spare tyre in the boot.

Seeing as some new cars don't have a spare at all, I think you'd be fine risking it ;)

These days you get a can of tyreweld or something

No spare required and a spare is only checked if it's on the outside (like SUVs have) and then only checked to make sure it won't fall off.
NCT don't give a toss if you're stranded somewhere without a spare tyre :D

My car passed its NCT test last week without a spare wheel, it is converted to LPG autogas and has its LPG donut tank in the spare wheel well so having a spare wheel or lack thereof does not matter for the NCT test.

Have you taken me up wrong or am I taking you up wrong? I was telling the op they'd be fine for the NCT without a spare wheel.

Just on the issue of your LPG conversion. Did you inform your insurance company and what did they say about it. Was thinking about getting a conversion done but just looking for a heads up for any potential headwrecking moments with insurance companies. I had read a while back on here about a lad who had his insurance cancelled because of it.

Can we stay on NCT spare tyre topic please? Plenty of LPG threads already in this forum.

If the spare is present, it may be checked (has been for all of mine anyway) and must be correct, but it does not need to be present.

I wouldn't be too hopeful of passing any of the braking and balance tests with a spare wheel on.

If it's simply a steel wheel (rather than an alloy), but with the same size tyre as the OP has suggested, then there is no problem with the brake test.
As for 'Balance Tests' I don't think the NCT take the car over a tight-rope or anything........

.....if you're referring to wheel balancing this can only be done by taking each wheel off the car and checking it on a wheel balancing machine. Not something the NCT do, or indeed any reason why a steel wheel can not be found to be balanced correctly.

^^^^OP stated in his 1st post that it is the same size tyre as the others...

Page 65 of the NCT manual. http://www.ncts.ie/NCT%20Manual%20Revise%20May%202012.pdf

    1. Defects in a spare wheel tyre should not be considered a reason for failure.

Maybe they were checking for corrosion or damage in the boot floor.

Dunno, they always have a look in the spare wheel well anyway.

Just catching up with this thread now, only saw the first few replies after I posted!

Anyway, as stated by other posters it was fine on the spare....failed on one or two other non-related issues anyway, but nothing major. Will be sending it in for the retest next week now!

    Thanks for the replies!
