IT jobs in the public sector - how to apply?

I work in IT (desktop support) and I'm in the early stages of looking to change jobs. I'd like to get my CV out there to the public sector (hospitals, city council, etc.) but I'm not sure how best to do it (I've always worked in the private sector, so I'm well familiar with the recruitment agencies and websites on that side of the fence).

I've searched www.publicjobs.ie using "Information Technology" and the keyword "desktop" but there never seem to be any results.

I'm not really bothered about private v public sector employment per se - the real reason I'm asking this question is that I live right across from a major hospital and it would be a pity to miss any opportunities there - I really want to shorten my commute! :D

Can any of you recommend any other suitable portals or agencies that I should be trying?

    http://www.publicjobs.ie/publicjobs/campaignAdvert/9180.htm

They will be few and far between because the government is trying to shrink the Public Sector but Publicjobs.ie is the best place to look. Not everywhere uses the public appointments service to recruit and some just advertise through their own websites/newspapers - you would just need to keep your ear to the ground for those.

No IT jobs in the Civil Service at least at the moment. The only way you seem to be able to get any IT work in the CS now is by coming in as a contractor through an agency. I got a promotion to a JSA a few years back I am not even doing that type of work at the moment. Instead I am doing Level 1 Help Desk work. A lot of departments never put the time and money into training up their staff and instead use outside contractors to 'fill the gap'

Thanks Gazzer, would these be just the usual agencies that businesses would use (the likes of HCS or Radius here in the south-east), or are there particular agencies that specialise in public-sector/civil service work?

As above, you will really only see contractors now days. Whats with the need to work in the PS?

From the different departments I have worked in there are a lot of different agencies used.

The national library of Ireland and civil service might have yearly campaign for I.T roles. As mentioned before publicjobs.ie list it usually from now till November.

I can tell you the national library do have a big project starting and are recruiting now. They pay terribly compared to other contract work. There isn't much chance of getting a perm role out of them either.

A lot of desktop support in the civil service required a lot of knowledge on the process as much as the software. They rarely put inexperienced department staff into these roles as a result. Little or no chance of getting into any department desktop support situation unless you can gain 10 years + experience on their systems. Not a great way of doing things but that is how it is done.

Why do you want to work in the PS?
