I picked up one of these cameras (body only) in a charity shop today for 8 quid. I'm just wondering what sort of lens would be compatible with this camera? I'd be hoping to pick up something relatively cheaply on amazon/ebay. I've no experience with photography but it's something I'm looking to get into so I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just something to play around with for the time being. Any help appreciated :)

I think, nearly 100% sure, that this Camera will use the Canon EF Lens Line-up.

I would recommend the Canon EF 18-55 IS F3.5-5.6 (IS=Image Stabilizer).

the 18mm gives it a wide angle view and the 55mm enough to do a close-up in a room.

the F3.5-5.6 with this lens should be ok for most non flash light conditions.

the price range you would be looking for on Adverts is around 50-80 euros.

You can always haggle and strike a deal with someone on there.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for something like that! In general terms, if say I couldn't find that lens at a reasonable price, what would I be looking for to see if the lens is compatible? Would it be if its an EF fitting? Sorry, I'm completely clueless about all this so that might be a stupid question

Mounts are down the left side of the table, cameras clustered on the right. Yours is EF. Just be aware that Canon sold the 300V (just like other cameras they produced) under different names in the US and Japan for obscure marketing / copyright reasons.

Just a note, only EF lenses will fit the 300V, and not any of the digital only EF-S lenses.

Thinking out loud, I wonder if the 18-55 IS lenses are EF-S, and you're really looking (on adverts or eBay) at a 24-85 or 28-80 EF lens.

Wolfman is right in that a wide tele is a good place to start - if possible you should try for something with F/3.5

I had a feeling there was a missing link somewhere in that post! :o

I'll definitely look out for some of the lenses aidanic has posted. In the meantime my college photography society actually has lenses available to rent so I think I'll play around with those for a bit before making any purchases :)
