Laying stone setts and macdam in driveway

Hello fellow boardies, looking for advice regarding laying cobble granite setts in a driveway. Essentially from the two entrance pillars to the porch of the house (a straight run) I want to lay the cobbles with tarmacdam on either side making up the rest of the driveway. However I am wondering what best practice/most favoured way of finishing the driveway with the tarmac and the cobble stones. I assume I would lay a concrete base for the cobbles first, then the tarmac and finally lay the setts on the concrete base. However here lies the problem, if I completed the driveway as illustrated above I will have no straight edge to lay the tarmac against (taking into account of the height of the unplaced cobbles) unless I was to lay kerbs on either side of the concrete base. But the kerbs/concrete could get damaged by the tarmac contractors. I hope the above query is someway understandable, if not I can submit further information. All advice and previous experience greatly accepted. Yours sincerely Rebelden.

    Hi
Set the cobbles first. This will give you a level to tarmac too. Most tarmac contractors have a way to tarmac to the cobbles without damage. In laying the cobbles will also give you a good level to the house. Tarmac will not stain like concrete etc if you have a little overspill.

Hi macadam, no I having finished the project yet, still only contemplating the job and waiting for the weather to improve! Have you ever completed something similar?
